A Final Farewell

Give sorrow words;
the grief that does not speak
Whispers the o'er-fraught heart
and bids it break.
~ William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act IV, Scene III

I'll preface this by saying for those of you who hate this kind of thing? Please just try to understand that for some of us, this is how we deal with this beautiful yet brutal sport that we all love. Some of us need to pay a small tribute and say goodbye as that's all we can really do.

Goodbye to those we've lost this year. This list is incomplete - it's all I can do in one sitting - so please feel free to add anyone I've left off and I apologize for anyone who should be here and is not.

The names are in no particular order as they were all important, they all mattered, and they've all left holes in the hearts of their connections and their fans and the racing world.

Farewell.....

Great post. Sad to see that many of our warriors gone over the year...

That's very sweet. Thank you.

Thanks for that. It's amazing how many I can picture. It's good to remember them.

azerica 12-22-2007 03:08 PM

Touching post. It is really sad to know that we will never again see them running on track or in a pasture somewhere....

Oh I believe we will.
A great post and quite thoughtful.

Who Doctor Who.....the memories that name invokes. I can still hear Terry Wallace's voice bellowing out as "The Doctor" came rolling on home.

Thanks for the wonderful post.

Thank you.

Some great names on this list, I hope they will remain great wherever they might be right now.

These past few weeks have caused heartbreak for many racing fans in the UK, The deaths of Granit Jack, Detroit City and Macs Joy touched the hearts of even the most unforgiving racing fan. I haven't been able to get into National Hunt racing since and for the first time in many years, I'm not looking forward to Cheltenham or Aintree next year. It has come to the stage where I'm just hoping every horse gets around and comes back safe, which isn't how this sport should be.

I saw Granit Jack in the paddock before his great second in the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, not knowing that the next time he would appear in the same paddock he would be moments from his death :(

This is the final time I saw him in the flesh. Sleep well big man.

Thank you for posting this.

I feel all of our warriors should be remembered, but unfortunately there is no readily accessable list of names. So many fall through the cracks.

Inesperado also fell this year.

Thank you for your persistent concern. Let us all pray the list will be much shorter next year. God Bless all our heroic horses.

And I'll paint your fair picture on my lonely heart."

Amen, from the buckle of the bible belt.

paisjpq 12-22-2007 08:22 PM

don't we already have a dead horses thread?

blackthroatedwind 12-22-2007 08:25 PM

Sanctimony knows no bounds.

DerbyCat 12-22-2007 08:28 PM

The horses (besides the ones already on the list) that broke down at Bay Meadows this past year:

Cards Speak
He's Storming
Imperial Eyes (the horse Russell Baze was whipping to excess and was then suspended for)

R.I.P. and thank you, to all of these horses, for the joy (and sometimes sorrow) that you brought to us.

fpsoxfan 12-23-2007 05:56 AM

Interesting thread. Very well done. Massaud breaking down on opening day was awful.

As always your sensitivity shines through. Classy.

IrishofNDMan 12-23-2007 10:50 AM

More importantly we should be making a thread adding our loved ones that we have lost this year, and praying for them.

Merry Christmas
