An Open Letter To Race Track Management

Below is a copy of the letter I sent to The Meadows

"This past Tuesday I took another trip to The Meadows for an afternoon of Harness Racing. My past couple of trips their have been enjoyable as I always go during the week seeing how construction has limited, to put it mildly, the seating and betting experience. Not too mention Mother Nature in Pennsylvania during the Fall and Winter months.

Once I arrived I was immediately taken by the overly strong cigarette and cigar smoke. Now, The Meadows has a smoking and non smoking section, albeit they are very close due to the size of the betting facility. It does not matter as on this day while sitting in the non smoking section after 15 minutes I had a shortness of breath and watery eyes. Not an hour later I was going outside along the fronstretch to grasp some fresh air to keep my sanity.

I stayed until the 11th race but will not be back untill one of two things happens. The construction is complete and I will be able to take in a race experience with some sense of comfort or you implement immediately a no smoking policy indoors. I greatly enjoy your track, listening to Roger Houston call the races and the atmosphere of the mountains all around but I will not be making the 2 hour drive back as I stated earlier untill you make some attempts to cater to the comfort of your paying customers. The betting facility on Tuesday December 18th was the most uncomfortable setting that I have been in, and I used to spend a lot of time in bars."

Folks, I respect the rights of smokers but if you feel the same as I do about the level of discomfort I encourage you to voice your opinion about your favorite "betting hole".

Let's just say that Ohio didn't pass their anti-smoking law, and that Scioto didn't allow smoking in the Clubhouse. I would write the same letter to them complaining that I couldn't smoke a cigar...

I used to go there when I lived in West Virginia. It is very smoky inside. I don't know why, it just seems they have no ventilation or something. Or the fact that 90% of the population of Pittsburgh over the age of 15 still smoke.

I'm all for indoor smoking, just think they ought to segregate the designated smoking sections better; like with Plexiglass walls and doors and such - so the folks that don't want to deal with it don't have to.
