drinking and gambling
 

was chatting about this at lunch today...as this is the season when many of us might drink alot more than usual, does anyone have any good stories of how they won big betting while drunk.. I dont have any positive stories regarding this topic (royal ascot 02 being the worst example~!).. its grand having a few and betting but there comes a certain point where its a slippery slope.

I have stories of winning several hundred dollars and then I begin to drink and the next thing I know I am down a couple of hundred dollars. I typically make it a point never to drink while I am gambling.

I'll seriously drink or I'll seriously gamble....just not both at the same time...

No stories of my own but I remember a group of us were at a night meeting a Newmarket a few years back. We were watching this race from Newcastle (I think) and this bloke standing next to us was paraletic, could hardly stand. When the race finished, in a slurred voice he ask he what had won. So I told him the number of the horse (4) and the reply was "ahhh ****" he started to fish for his slip in his pocket.

Without looking at it first, he showed me what he had backed. The Tote slip said £50 win on the 4 horse.......... I was like, "you've backed the winner an it was 16/1 at the off".

He sort of stumbled around before saying, "I wanted the number three horse"......... I nearly said, well give it here then. He was a nice guy though, after collecting from the window he gave us £50.

When I did used to drink quite heavily, I'd never drink and gamble at the same time

i once got so drunk i thought i was betting a race at churchill but it turned out i had made a mistake and was actually was beating my wife at home.

Leaving the Kentucky Derby after a couple days of serious drinking six of us headed back to Cleveland and shortlt stopped off at the turnpike stop to take a leak. We got back in and after over another two hours someone said "Hey, where's Jim?"

We'd left him at the turnpike stop.

As this was before cell phones we just left him there and he got a ride from someone.

I'll 2nd that bigtime... and agree, never at the same time. If I'm gambling, there's definitely a limit on how many beers I'll have.

The first time I played craps in Vegas, after a few..and many more during.... I had chips in both suit pockets, pants pockets, getting yelled at to ""get your chips off the table"".... I turned to a guy in a cowboy hat and said..."" Am I playing right ? ".. The guy says..."" I have NO idea WHAT your playing, WHY your playing...but your up 2 grand allready "".. To this day I have no idea what I did.. but I had plenty of chips in all my pockets.. :D

The key to the day, I was winning early and as the drinks flowed, so did the money. My buddies and I were out in the picnic area havig a great time.

In fact, at one point I came back after hitting the Jim Dandy Bar only to find my extra pair of underwear(I always bring an extra pair just in case of an unexpected shart) hanging from a tree. Well, the joke was that they were a pair of FTL so as passerbys were admiring them my buddies were saying "First Time Lasix."

Anyway, I had a huge bet on Left Bank that day and what a great race it was. I then proceeded to hit the Superfecta in the final race. It was my best day ever at the track. I think I ended up $2100 ahead. Good Times!

plus it eliminates that messy bulge wherever you carry the extra pair.

2. I bring an extra pair of undergarmets wherever I go. Not just for shart defense.
