Interesting take, by a trip handicapper, on a horse that has had incredibly good fortune. If I didn't know better, I'd think that Motion (Mr. BIG ASS when it comes to racing luck) was the trainer of this horse.

OMB lucked out when facing Cherokee Triangle a few times on the turf early, when the latter was having seriously running-straight-in-the-lane issues and was probably best. (I'd venture a guess that CT DOESN'T LIKE OFF TURF). And, then, last time out, he gets Desormeaux's best ride of the year. KD steers him to the best part of the track early and gets a clear run in the lane while Seaspeak, stupidly kept inside on the backstretch--where divets are flying all over the place-- was doing left and right turns (and I mean this horse was all over the place) in the stretch courtesy of his jock's excessive whipping.

Just a thought.

He's being pointed to the San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan 12th.

I don't feel I have an edge here.

Colonel John will be overbet, but is as good a win candidate as anyone, and should be the favorite. Massive Drama is a toss and one of the only useable expected underlays. Referee is the entry who I expect to have the best derby prep season, although not if he runs out west, where his talent is neutralized. At #14 he is an alternate...
Anything can happen here.

John, sunset, indian, monba, referee are my top 5 , but I wouldn't even put those 5 in an exacta.

Had this misfortune of running into Monba in his debut. Looked like a monster. I'll be taking a flyer on him.

Finally a Full Field

Nice to get a full field entered. The last 4 or 5 years this has been a NW of 2 race with 5 or 6 horses. Some speed, some closers, nice breeding. Good connections. Big earnings for the top 2, and some good seasoning for a lot of these horses.

I wasn't playing the day of Monba's debut, but how the hell does a colt like that go off at 10/1?
It isn't very often you see a 2yo colt with a pedigree and trainer like that go off at those odds. The three stallions in the most important spots in his pedigree (Maria's Mon, Easy Goer, and Silent Screen) were ALL 2yo champions. You don't see that very often. Add in Pletcher and I'm a bit shocked he didn't take more money in a MSW. Of course, I guess it is always a little easier after the fact.

In terms of this race, it looks pretty wide open to me.

Is this called the Hollywood Futurity,or have they actually renamed it the Cashcall Futurity? Wow,I think it's the Cashcall Futurity now......How classy.

SLEW'S TIZNOW a Scratch from the Futurity...

tiznowthegreat 12-21-2007 05:01 PM

Absolutely love Referee but hate the post. At least with the scratch he moves down one but they still start so close to the turn that it will be way too much to overcome. Still will put some money on him as I think he's the best in here but not that much the best and will need a great trip and ride to overcome.

I know that Pletcher wants to win this one bad. He is chasing his own season tying record of graded stakes victories. He sends three in here. Its interesting to see these three worked out together on Dec 16th going 5 F.
Monba timed in 1:00 while the other two galloped out together in :59.60.

Of the three, I like Meal Penalty cause he is trying to shake thigs up by adding blinkers and a red hot jock in Ramon Dominguez. I dont see why Dominguez would if he did not think he had a legit chance of winning this.

Meal Plenty is my pick for this.

It is interesting that Zayat would run two of his most talented 2yo sprinters against each other here.
He really has a good thing going with Massive Drama. Kafwain is almost a 6furlong sire, but people are starting to buy into the idea that this horse has potential at a route. Baffert has him on his toes. Eaton's Gift could be a real problem for MD. Last two were big impressive efforts. The way he did them, almost would indicate that he is a threat to freak if allowed to go all-out on a fast cushion track. They don't exactly compliment each other's styles.

Nakatani has had things his way with Colonel John and could well get another trip with the two Zayat colts and a couple other nice animals who attend the pace... He wants to sit a nice trip and time his run just off the big pace. His biggest obstacle would be one of the speed horses getting bold in the lane and having to take them on early.

after studying the race; i don't like Sunset or Monba all that much.
Should be Colonel John or Indian Sun, but Eaton's Gift, Referee, and Massive Drama all have an outside shot.

This is going to be one of those ultra-dynamic synthetic races that I am supposed to oppose, but it does look very interesting.
