TVG's golden goose to be cooked?

The rights to NYRA's in-home signal is currently held by Television Games Network, but that contract expires at the end of this year. TVG's largest rival, TrackNet - a partnership between Churchill Downs Inc. and Magna Entertainment Corp. that buys and sells simulcasting signals - is aggressively seeking the NYRA rights, which are the most valuable in the country.

If TVG loses the NYRA, they might as well close up shop. They going to get Fairmount to replace them?

NYRA has stated befor that they want to be close to CDI and MEC in terms of TV

One would think the NYRA would want bids on the tv rights.

The Yankees have their own network, for instance. Why can't the NYRA be on the YES network, let's say. Whatever happens with the tv rights, the NYRA must get creative and fully maximize this exclusive revenue source for NY horsemen.

Does anyone know the previous deal the NYRA struck for television rights and the amount of money paid them for those rights ?

They'd get bumped everytime the Yankees played a day game. That wouldn't be good for them at all.

There is a schedule conflict there. Iman sees a $14mil shortfall for NYRA in their recent budget proposal. How much did the NYRA realize from their last tv contract ?

And the politicians want to get their hands on the NYRA tv rights. So there is infighting going on behind the scenes over this lucrative, and undersold, source of income for NY Horsemen.

Just to clarify.
I didnt say there was a $14M budget shortfall.
Based on NYRAs projections, not mine, they will make $362,000 for the year of 2008.
However, that includes the gain of a one time sale of part of the property at the Big A. Thus without the sale of the property, they would show a loss for 2008 of approx $14M from normal racing operations.

NYRA, if they are the surviving entity to run NY racing, or whomever might be, must make the best deal to promote NY racing and get the most financially.

They must also trim costs and or lower purses. IMO

The YES network is only shown on limited Cable Companies in the NY area. The odds of cable companies putting a NY exclusive racing network on basic cable around the country are almost nil. Most companies don't even carry both TVG and HRTV.

It would be in the best interest of the NYRA to at least have there signal available to all internet betting platforms. Currently they are not even available on HRTV. They should do what California has done and make betting available to all sites along with streaming video from the track.

TVG is advertising a harness package available ONLY to residents of NY. I don't care about harness and I don't live in NY, but is this a sign of what is coming..even more splintering and segragation?

sumitas 12-02-2007 02:23 PM

Lower purses ? I have to get off that train. The purses should be much higher in NY. And the tv rights should be contracted to the highest bidder.
