wow! not good for Gulfstream or the paper.

i love this comment about the Sun-Sentinel, it sure sounds like the wrong approach for a newspaper. Although it must be hard to be in the newspaper business these days.

Exactly. Opinion becomes fact via mere repetition. But the scary thing to me is the willingness to take everything one hears or reads at face value, without question.

I was in the neighborhood and stopped at Gulfstream a couple weeks ago around 4pm to pick up the DRF for the next day. I walked around a bit and there were exactly 12 people playing slot machines. They all looked a bit like Stronach.

Oh, yeah... they didn't have the next day's Form.

On the bright side, Gulfstream's Holloween Party hosted by Dennis Rodman was quite the event.

It was reported last week that Gulfstream was losing much $$$ on their slots. That was the tip-off that something was seriously amiss at that facility. Employee theft is a huge problem.

Thought I had read that the avg take from these machines at GP was in the neighborhood of 70.00 a day.... subtract the million bucks a month of comped "funny money" and they are probably operating close to zero net...

Is the 60% tax, A tax on Net or gross? either way any left over sure looks like a small bit that will be left to prop up the horses.Another example of the unsoundness of th TB industry promoting compition for the gaming dollar.

totally off topic - but I went there over the weekend, the buffet sucks. There were 10 people there.. .all Canadians looking for a cheap meal. I wouldn't eat the buffet again if it was free.

on the other hand I went there 3 weeks ago and it was packed because...

Used to be such a beautiful place to take in the scenery, weather and racing. Now it's a money sucking hole.

lol. I saw the Village People at Wrigley Field once on 70's Night. I haven't had a decent bit to eat at a track here since the Cuban sandwich stand at Hialeah.

You seen the first Gulfstream condition book? They're carding Florida-bred only races and, yes, $12.5 maiden claimers. I'm guessing those are give-backs from the new simulcast deal.

you may be right about that. but think about what a colossal blunder it is to be saying that about a brand new facility. when you add up all of the problems that various people have mentioned, its staggering. From afar the thing I don't like is the track configuration, whereby the shortest 2 turn race is 9F with a short run to the turn.

It's the same thing at Saratoga - but the timing is obviously different.

In the winter - a lot of newly turned 3yo's with an eye on the Classic races in May and June probably aren't ready for a two-turn 9 furlong race....but aren't exactly looking for a one-turn mile either.

It has upgraded races like the Sam F. Davis and Tampa Derby over the last few years - races that have siphoned Todd Pletcher's best prospects.

Some people forget - but had Curlin not been sold after his maiden win - he was nominated to take on Any Given Saturday in Sam Davis - and his trainer seemed intent on doing so by all quotes in the press. The top four finishers in the Tampa Derby all won Graded Stakes later on in the year.

Curlin eventually went to Oaklawn for a two-turn race at less than 9 furlongs in the Rebel for career start #2.

is the run-up to the turn as short at Saratoga as it is at Gulfstream? It seems really disadvantageous to have an outside post at GS.

I agree that Tampa Bay has been elevated in stature the last few years in terms of 3yo preps. I don't expect that will change either given the recent success of those who prepped there.

I can't say with exactitude, but i'm pretty sure the run to the first turn seems about the same at GP as it is at Saratoga.
