Favorite greys

Euro and I were chatting about greys. I mentioned Spectacular Bid and Skip Away. He mentioned Manarchos.
This came about because of I mentioned one of my favorite greys, Mumtaz Mahal, from which all greys descend (the Tetrarch).
So, if you have a favorite grey...feel free to add to the list.
Thanks.

I would love to do a geneology of grays in horse racing going back to Tetrarch. But one grey we didnt mention was Silver Charm. Can anyone get the breeding on Tetrarch. I am having a hard time finding it for some reason.

Also, Native Dancer (the grey ghost of Sagamore), Silver Charm, have been spoken for, (other thread).

Looks like The Tetrarch's sire was a horse named Roi Herode. Here is Roi Herode's peedigree.

Roi Herode was bred in France in 1904 by Maurice Caillaut and the Comte de Pourtales. He was a grey son of the grey Le Samaritain (1895), a very good stakes winner in France (winner of the Grand Prix de Deauville, Grand St. Leger de France, Prix Daru), and himself a son of the grey Le Sancy. Le Sancy was the dominant sire in France in his time, although his male line back through Atlantic, Thormanby, Windhound, and Pantaloon, was one of the last surviving remnants of the once mighty Herod male line (Pantaloon was by Castrel, by Buzzard, by Woodpecker, by Herod).

Roi Herode, out of the mare Roxelane, by War Dance (the French War Dance, by Galliard - War Paint, not to be confused with the American one, by Lexington - Reel). This gave Roi Herode an interesting pedigree background, because not only was he inbred 4x4 to his tail-male ancestor Thormanby, but his second dam, Rose of York, was a half-sister to the great Derby winner and sire Bend Or, both out of Thormanby's daughter Rouge Rose. Roxelane had been an outstanding racemare in her own right, winner of the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) and Prix de Diane (French Oaks), and she was a full sister to the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (French 2,000 Guineas) winner Rodilard.

Euro,
One way to do it is to go to nybreds.com. Do a hypo mating with one of the there, type in my mare's name, Bourbon Streettune (grey), and just keep going back (click on the one's you're interested in). She goes back to the Godolphin Arabian.
It takes time, but it will answer a lot for you.
Also, you could do a similar investigation with a grey stallion, like Wheelaway.

Thanks for the help. For the first time in a LONG TIME, I have nothing to do on a Friday night. I think I may do a history of greys.

The incredible Arromanches. There is no other.

Nicknamed the "gray win machine," the ten-year-old won 31 of 78 career starts and earned $807,924 during a career that spanned eight seasons.

eurobounce 07-11-2006 04:45 PM

Stellar Jayne was one of my favorites.

Downthestretch55 07-11-2006 04:50 PM

I'll add Buddha, son of Unbridled's Song. Not because of his race record, as he was injured. Just because he looked so nice.
His "get" should be showing up on the track about now.

Another good sire...Strawberry Road. He's now in Austrailia but he stood at High Cliff in NY for a time.

skippy skippy snd skippy...

Kasept 07-11-2006 04:58 PM

Spalding Gray..

paisjpq 07-11-2006 05:07 PM

its been said before.
but I was and will always be a huge Skip Away fan...When i lived in KY I went w/ a mare to Hopewell (to a different stallion) but they were nice enough to take me back to the barn to see Skippy and feed him a mint--it was a HUGE thrill. The hair has gone almost white but he is still a beauty. Sad that he has been less than stellar at stud.

Kasept 07-11-2006 05:33 PM

What about the best grey in training.. SPOOKY MULDER!!! Our Kelso...

Very surprised that nobody took Artie Shiller too.
Plenty of other good greys.
Thanks for all of the contributions to this thread. My guess is that many more will sign in.

randallscott35 07-11-2006 05:41 PM

Gander, Evening Attire, Spectacular Bid, Silver Charm....

One of my favorites, a horse named Anice's Finale, ran in the 8th today at Calder. Didn't do too well I'm afraid.

Bystander 07-11-2006 05:52 PM

Do you mean El Prado? He certainly belongs, but Artie Schiller is bay.
With Anticipation.
