Something kind of odd

There are a pair of 2-year-old fillys making their career debuts tomorrow, both are sired by Elusive Quality, and both are out of dams who produced Kentucky Derby winners.

* In Delaware Park's 7th race- Irish bred debuter Elusive Moment (Elusive Quality - I'll Get Along) is a full sibling to '04 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones.

While debuting at Delaware Park may seem like a discouraging thing, such recent star power as Afleet Alex, Barbaro, Bellamy Road, and Hard Spun have debuted there. As well as Soto, High Limit, and Adore The Gold.

* In Keeneland's 5th race- Elusive Sparkle makes her career debut. (by Elusive Quality out of Bedazzle) she is a half sibling to '07 KY Derby winner Street Sense.

Also debuting in that race is Interior Design - who is a full sibling to Champion 2-year-old Tempera...who earned the highest Beyer in BC Juvenile Filly history when she won in 2001. She died in Dubai the following winter.

You also have a full sibling to Battle Won in that race....of Cannon Shell fame.

Where did Smarty Jones debut?

The Indomitable DrugS 10-19-2007 08:41 PM

Philly Park

Thanks. What are the connections of all 3 of those fillies you mentioned?

The Indomitable DrugS 10-19-2007 08:53 PM

Nafzger for the half to Street Sense.

Eoin 'the incompetent" Harty for the full to Tempera.

Greg Foley for the full to Battle Won

Eddie Gaudet for the full to Smarty Jones.

It's a little disconcerting that the full sister to SJ only sold for $295K as a yearling - however, an Orientate half brother to SJ only sold for $40K as a yearling one year earlier...and that was in '05 when SJ had already accomplished everything.

The full to SJ is working fairly well....her recent works are....

* Bullet best of 7

* Best of 2

* Bullet best of 9

* 2nd best of 7

* Bullet best of 12

* Bullet best of 6

Not to keep you running around in circles, but what did Smarty Jones sell for as a yearling (if he did at all)? Maybe the mare doesn't drop particularly good looking babies.

Elusive Sparkle is 15-1. She has a poor post position though :(

Smarty was a homebred.

The mare, I'll Get Along was a 40K yearling.....but that was actually a decent sum of money for a daughter of Smile. She was the 2nd most of 11 Smile yearlings to sell that year - and was double the average.

There were a few rail winners yesterday.

Wait a race or two on this one. Nafzger never has them cranked for their first outing. I would expect her to come up a bit short today.

Here's hoping she turns out to be another good one for Nafzger/Tafel.

May I inquire as to what else God has told you?

Elusive Moment "gave way in the final furlong" and finished 4th.
