Funny Cide

Nice to see the horse being paraded around like a freak show. It pained me to hear Durking say "The Gutsy Glelding." Still think it is a bad idea to retire him but oh well.

Let the horse run. He's healthy! He's still capable of a 98 beyer. It's odd to end the season of a perfectly healthy horse in mid summer. If it were up to me I would have ended with the Empire Classic.

I don't know..I think I'd want my Derby winning gelding to go out in victory too. While still competitive he wasn't exactly winning very often. The constant criticism by others asking for his retirement had to get tiring after awhile too.

Personally I think it's good for the future of the sport (the children) to have Funny Cide Days and the like. One of my co-workers was dragged to the Jim Dandy by his daughter in order to see the Derby winner. Popular horses do have an impact on people...now the industry just has to find a clever way to get them to put money through the windows. Rags to Riches is proof that it is hard to market the sport on the laurels of one horse, but if you can get them there, it's a definite bonus.

I agree with this. I enjoyed seeing him without controversy. And he looked happy being a pony.

Really wish I could get one of those posters they're giving out.

I can't wait until next year when the article comes out that Funny Cide is coming out of retirement because he just isn't happy not racing.

I confess I loved every moment of it and thought it was terrific, even the overwrought emotions brought on by humming along, " ... did I ever tell you you're my hero? ... you are the wind beneath my wings ...", but then I am a hopeless romantic.

This is much better than seeing him end up breaking a leg. At least he still gets treated like a king being at the track.

Any horse can break a leg. You might as well retire Rags, Street Sense, Curlin, The Tin Man, Evening Attire, The Green Monkey, and any other popular horse that I'm not thinking of.

Why even have horse racing if you aren't going to use perfectly healthy stars?
It's hypocrisy to me. No horse goes undefeated their whole career. Yet the whole world expected nothing less and completely bashed every race he was in.

Count me in with the crowd that is glad they retired him.
I can't blame the yellow-bussers for wanting their star to go out with a stakes win. It was a nice ending. He is seven now and his best years were clearly behind him. Not very many horses retire healthy after a stakes win, and I am glad that they had the chance and (for once) the good sense to take advantage of that chance.
I completely fail to see how he was "paraded around like a freak show."

It would have been great to see him win the Triple Crown, or any other gelding, for that matter. That is the only way that I want to see it done, with a gelding...
