United Nations awesome race in jeopardy
 

I can't believe this. Cacique, Relaxed gesture, English Channel, Better Talk Now are all slated to run in the United nations this saturday at Monmouth over the new turf course. Almost a breeders cup race in July.
The problems with NJ govt threaten to have it cancelled and as of now it looks like it will be. Any word by any NJ folks on if this impasse can be settled?

Won't be settled by tomorrow. Which means there will be a shutdown. I say its 50/50, the problem is trainers have to make alternate plans, so say they get it fixed by Friday, is the race still on? Tough call.

How tragic is that? We get an awesome mini arlington million and its gonna get nined? This sucks.

There is no budget yet. Hopefully they will come to an agreement this week. I'm pretty sure they are still at the statehouse arguing right now.

Lets hope that a few of the state senators have a passion for grade one racing on the turf and work very hard today for their consituents and a balanced budget.

I know Kev but its a damn shame. Do you know a racing fan alive who doesnt wanna see an EC, Gesture, and Cacique rematch with Better Talk Now and his rabbit as well? That would be the best race of the summer. Shame to lose it.

Arguably the worst-run State in the nation. Gov. John "I promise not to raise your taxes" Corzine. Supreme tax-n-spend governor. Jersey has seen State expenditures increase by 45% during the last six years. Corzine says the tax increase is needed because srate schools and sevices are underfunded. They are anything but. Corzine carries the tax-n-spend gene and and will never cut or hold taxes steady or hold or reduce spending no matter what.

Taxes in Jersey have gone up almost every year since 2000. The tax burden in Jersey, per resident, are nearly TWICE AS MUCH AS THE NEXT HIGHEST TAX STATE.

The only issue is which taxes the Dem run Jersey legislators are going to raise. Most Dems are opposing any increase in the sales tax (political reprisal) and are working to boost already high property tax rates (gee, that's a surprise).

Republicans have presented detailed budget cuts of over $2 Billion. Corzine's plan increases spending by $2.8 Bil. How in the hell can they be $5 Billion apart on spending (State spending was around $17 Bil last year)?!?

Jersey has the worst State budget crises of any State not devastaed by last year's hurricanes.

New Jersey fiscal policy has always been compared to a "beer barrel tapped at both ends... one end flows into Philly, the other into NYC." I don'tk know how true that is but it's a f***ed-up state, that's for sure. Uncle F***ing Junior could do a better job.

Thats funny. A politician admitting to enjoying and supporting horse racing and wagering would be a super-solid incumbent not up for reelection in Texas.

Jersey gets a lot of revenue from gambling. This guy has to be insane to be honest with you. Shutting down racing, the lottery, and casinos for even one day costs him a lotta budget money. Makes no sense. Wouldn't you want to keep "non essential state workers" as well as the thousands of private jobs that are also involved working so that the state doesnt get even further behind the 8 ball?

The struggle to get slots still continues in Texas. The purses are so bad compared to Louisiana. Horseman go where the money is.

Now the lottery in Texas is huge. But it is equated with Bingo at the Church. Horse racing has very few friends here. Image problem.

At this point the Republicans can do nothing about it. Its Roberts, a D from South Jersey that is fighting with Corzine. I wouldn't be surprised if George Norcross has something to do with this.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Casino and Racing people eventually be declared essential employees.

a lot of revenue that just disappeared about 8 am ET....sheer scare tactics on the part of those with an agenda--more worried about winning than affecting a bunch of peoples' personal budget!

This race is a go now.

That's great news. Would have been a shame if it was cancelled.

Monmouth expects to reopen tomorrow. The casinos could take a while longer. Stupid people shouldn't be making decisions like this.
