Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN

Last radio show is August 17.

Thoughts?

i think it sucks. love dan patrick, love his radio show. i heard him say that he was leaving...and thought, what the hell? so tony and i go to chilis for a quick bite heading out of hot springs, and they announce that not only is he leaving his radio show (which is what i was hoping, staying with espn but not on radio) but he's leaving espn altogether. now who will i listen to in the afternoons????

i thought he was one of the best in the business, if not THE best. great interviews, great voice, great with voicing his opinions, and very knowledgable. i'll miss him.

I thought his radio program was pretty good to listen too. Seemed to ask really good questions. Todays show was good about the questions he askes to Bud Selig about Barry Bonds homerun chase. I wonder who will take over that time spot "Phil the Show Killer" or perhaps maybe Keith Oberman. I miss the Sportscenter he use to do with Kenny Mayne.

I had heard that he will be the next Bob Barker, hosting The Price is RIght. He was excellent on Sports Center for many years but I never liked the radio show. The opening of the radio show was often pompous and condescending as if he is the only one in the country that understood what the topic was that day. That being said, he was very good especially in the early years.

Kasept 07-10-2007 05:47 AM

Never was a big Dan fan.. Radio-wise, nothing beat the early years of the Kornheiser radio show in the late 90's/early 00's.. NOTHING. The on-air nonsense was great enough, but the core group of listeners on the Net were treated to some of the most hysterical, uprorious insanity I've ever heard, especially during the breaks when you could listen to Tony, Andy and Co., guests, etc.. "The Internet Show" was lost at one point when Tony got his "vacation", a month-long suspension over something idiotic that the ESPN suits got in a twist over. And "Phil the Show Killer" originated on The Mr. Tony Show... not on Dan Patrick's...

Anyone remember the Tony Show and these elements?

The hilarity of "Know Your Heads", a game show where callers had to identify three levels of ESPN anchors.. SportsCenter types.. then an ESPN2 type.. then an ESPNews type..

Rich Eisen telling the "Bea Arthur joke".. An Internet-only classic that will NEVER die...

The callers were unbelievable... "Smart and funny" was what Tony wanted..

Steve the Syncophant, from DC... "Tony my leige..."

Sheldon and his ridiculous Joke of the Day..

"Affirmation"... Only loyal listeners will know this reference... I called in with an "affirmation" story that pleased Tony to no end after Bob Haldeman, or John Ehrlichman, died..

The witness protection guy from Syracuse who supposedly was a janitor at the Post-Standard... the creator of the 'Castro Convertable' reference... (Itself a riff off an athlete that told Tony to hold on because 'someone was at the door delivering a couch...')

I'm likely just whistling in the dark here, but if any of you heard the show, you're laughing thinking about. The greatest free 3 hours evah....

The "Tony" show was the best sports talk I've ever heard. I liked that he only talked to the elite sports writers, whose opinions I still search out if there is a big story in their city. The show wasn't always about sports but it was always entertaining.

Latest rumor about Dan Patrick, from today NY Daily News, is that he will be coming in as Imus' permanent replacement at FAN.

I liked Dan's program to a point...but you are right...he would often be pompous...he would whine if you didn't agree with his point which he did frequently with his call in guests(not fans) and disagree with athletes, etc. who have first hand knowledge of the situations at hand.
I think he was much better on Sports Center covering the highlights than trying to be one on the radio.

OOOOOOOOO

The "Fantasy Head Draft" was the greatest concept in sports radio history. Mr. Tony over the dull, pompous Dan Patrick by open lengths.

And the "Rock Draft" was another classic... "In the third round, from University of Hawaii, we take Molten Lava.."

And of course... "High Ankle Sprains"...

ror! I had forgotten how amusing that show was.

otisotisotis 07-10-2007 01:33 PM

Kornheiser by far the best radio sports-related show ever!

Danzig 07-10-2007 03:44 PM

never heard the kornheiser show, but grew up reading his articles in the post.

ALostTexan 07-10-2007 04:00 PM

i heard monday that Imus is coming back after the summer at his cancer ranch. that's why FAN didn't fill the spot.

ddthetide 07-12-2007 07:16 PM

tony was best on radio when wilbon, rich eisin would call in on short notice.

DP show was never the same after dibble left.
DP got to caught up in the hollywood actor crap. he'd have actors on that want to be athletes and fall all over them, i'd have to turn it off.
