Big number for AGS. Yet another three-year-old contender for the summer and fall. Anyone still think this is a weak crop?

Got a Beyer for Funny Cide?

Buried in there too is a career high 103 for Nobiz Like Shobiz. Anyone bring up on here that Nobiz showed up with front wraps. He had not worn them before.

I think the blinkers should go back on Nobiz ASAP. He showed much more speed with them on in the Wood Memorial and there was no reason why he shouldn't have either made the pace or been right with it the whole way, especially with a claimer cutting out the early fractions. I don't think Nobiz was beating AGS yesterday, but he just never looked comfortable rating.

not sure blinkers would be the answer, certainly didn't work for sightseeing! he was forwardly placed, too forwardly at one point as the jock ran out of racing room. hard to get a horse going again when you have to put on the brakes. hard to say that it would have mattered regardless with sightseeing.
as for nobiz, he lost to a good horse who lost by a scant nose to the future ky derby winner.

What's the Funny Cide beyer ?

Personally I think this is a strong crop, relative to what we've had lately. Any Given Saturday may not want more than a mile and a sixteenth, but he's a quality, talented horse, yet maybe only 5th in the division overall, which says a lot.

Also, nobody's mentioned that Idiot Proof broke the track record at Monmouth yesterday in a stunningly good performance. This isn't an odd-distance record, it's 6F at Monmouth which they've probably run 15,000 times since Gilded Time set it in 1992. Obviously the track was fast yesterday but he ran .84 seconds faster than the very quick NJ bred Joey P (who holds the track record at Mth at 5.5F.)

That was an awesome performance by Idiot Proof.

I think Pletcher completely mismanaged Any Given Saturday this year, I know, the great Pletcher doesn;t make mistakes, but thinking back after this horses gut-wrenching race against Street Sense he runs in the Wood Memorial, a race he originally hadn't planned on running him in, the horse ran like a short,tired horse than goes on to the grueling Derby where he actually had a pretty decent run finishing 8th. I think we saw that he is a nice horse when he is rested and primed for his races. Having said that however, he didn't have to beat much yesterday as Nobiz is nothing but a plodding, no heart plug. I'm sick of all his excuses, it's always something, the only consistency this horse has shown is he is consistently slow, and he needs the stars alligned just right to run a decent race. I'm done with him. Sightseeing is another should, coulda, woulda, although what was Edgar trying to do on the backstretch blasting through AGS and the pace setter, Gomez slammed the door on him and that was it for Sightseeing.

As do I. But believe it or not, we had a whole lot of people writing off this year's crop A MONTH BEFORE THE DERBY.

This crop of 3 year olds has proven to be very strong and if any of them stick around next year they will dominate the older crap division.

I thought High Finance was much more impressive then perfect trip winner AGS, both ran great numbers but High Finance was sensationsal.

a month before the derby it did kinda look pathetic. but it has turned out that the group is what I would call solid and sound. maybe its better that the development occurs more gradually over the spring/summer.

the way things are going this 3yo crop is likely to overshadow the elders who are in disarray.

seems early every spring there are naysayers regarding the current 3 yo's.... last years got a lot of praise early on--but that was definitely not the norm.

but why is it ok to make excuses for any given saturday? that is what you're doing.

nobiz beat ags, and now ags beat him back. pletcher may have rushed Saturday into the wood, he said that it would however give AGS an extra week between his last race and the derby, so i don't know that it was necessarily a mistake. had he done differently, and AGS not run in the top three in the bluegrass, he'd have missed the derby altogether.

AGS also had a horrendous trip in the Wood.. I don't think it's very debatable who the better horse is right now.

yes he did. and i think the jock knew better than to get after him to try to improve his position in that race, as a third was all he needed in earnings. mission accomplished in that regard, altho he didn't get the derby win. but then, only one horse can win! not like the other 19 are suddenly nags...

not really, not as bad as this group looked. in most years a month before the derby there are several horses who have solid 100 BSF credentials. This year if your horse was in the mid nineties, you had a shot. Street Sense had his big juvenile number but there were questions surrounding him.
I think it was a very common opinion a month before this derby that the crop looked weak. What needs to be said is that it's pointless to make a judgement at that point in time given how things can unfold.
