Street Cry, is of course the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense. He lost both races in narrow fashion to Flame Thrower...both in hanging fashion with an Alydar-esque action.

Both races yielded strong triple digit Beyer Speed figures....and are two of the most exciting 2yo races run this decade.

It wasn't really to press any issue. They were two great races---and I'm sure many people haven't seen them before.

But you are right---I wouldn't have posted a link to them if they had no connection with last week. Still....what does it hurt?

Good races, tx...i see no connection between these and recent races.

if anything, Flame Thrower has more in common with Curlin and Spectacular Bid in that all 3 horses outrun their pedigree. all 3 have weak families that may have or will adversely affect them at stud.

They were both really awesome 2-year-olds. I guess Flame Thrower was the more precocious of the two---and certainly seemed to have more heart of the two.

However--Street Cry got a dream setup in the Del Mar Futurity...as FT was out there battling with three wickedly fast horses. He really shouldn't have lost that one.

They were certainly two very different kind of horses. Flame Thrower was actually just a $27K September yearling, and resold for $270K just about a half a year later at OBS April....after working the outright fastest 1/4 mile.

Street Cry was bred in Ireland---and his mother won the Group one Irish Oaks in Europe as a 3-year-old.

She did, but my point was Flame Thrower. Just looking at families over the generations I'd say all 3 have a weakness there. Overall, Curlin probably has a deeper family than Flame Thrower or Spectacular Bid, but still I'd be wary of him at stud until he proves himself.

Here was Street Cry's finest moment of glory.......winning the 2002 Dubai World Cup in blowout fashion...after getting a dream rail-skimming ride from Calvin Bo....oops...that was Jerry Bailey.

If anyones curious, he followed this race up with a 6 1/2 length 118 Beyer romp in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster...and he wasn't even the favorite. Congaree was.

I don't know---I'm probably in the minority...but I see a lot of Street Cry in Street Sense when I watch the two of them on film. I steadfastly believe the sire was the better horse of the two--but, Street Sense can still get better, and prove me wrong about that.

Street Cry was 2nd fav for that Dubai World Cup race as well (at British odds). He was 9/2 2nd choice behind the 2/5 favourite Sakhee..He beat him 9 lengths..

Whatever happened to Arabian Light? He won the Breeders Futurity in impressive fashion at KEE and was never heard from again. He circled the field and won, something not easy to do at KEE with the shortened stretch for 1 1/16th races.

Pretty sure he was retired to Saudi Arabia. I liked that horse a lot considering that move he made at Keeneland, and I thought he ran pretty strong until the final 1/16 of the Juvy. I was looking forward to seeing him run on the TC trail in '01, but I never heard a thing from him again.

My personal favorite Street Cry race was the loss to Left Bank in the Whitney. That was a battle for the ages, and one that is STILL used on the cover of the DRF "Players Edition", if I recall correctly from my latest trip to Vegas.
