Hollywood Payout - I'm Confused

This doen't apply to me. I only got 4 right yesterday, but for future clarification; why was the Hollywood payout so low? I know there's a takeout and taxes, but it was $3,745,697.

6 winners x $29,775.00 = $178,650.00
plus
5 pick 5's x $218.00 = $1,090.00

Total = $179,740.00?????????????

more than 6 people had it.

There were 98 winning tickets (at $29K each) and who-know-how-many 5/6 tickets (at $218 each).

I'm really not being facetious asking this -- but that you didn't know this seems to indicate that you're new to the game. And that's fine...

I'm just curious as to what drew you to the Pick Six on Wednesday?

Again, not being facetious, but truly curious as to what attracts newer players to the Pick Six.

I'm just guessing here, but maybe when this person looked at the equibase charts for payouts he/she saw...

$2 pick six (5 correct) $218
$2 pick six (6 correct) $29,775

...and maybe thought that the # in parentheses was the number of winning tickets as opposed to the # out of 6 picked correctly?

that's my best guess...honest mistake

you nailed it. there is no doubt that is what caused the confusion.

Yeah that's exactly what happened. Thanks for the info everyone.

I am new. I just started going to the track a few months ago. I used to play poker (pretty successfully) and this fall tried my hand at football handicapping (moderately successfully). When football was over I gave horse racing a shot and really liked the whole experience a lot.

In the beginning I sucked at it. Now after reading a bunch of the books, I'm getting better, but still in the red. Recently in 6 races I hit 5 exactas.

I heard Steve talk about the pick 6 on "At the Races". I got a bunch of people to invest in my picks and I took a shot hoping to make a big hit. I still have a long way to go, but the big payout was the attraction.

It is like the lottery, except you get to eliminate some of the ping pong balls!

Okay so let me ask a question, why do they pay off for BOTH 6 correct picks and 5 correct picks? Shouldnt they only pay for those who got all six correct?

hockey2315 05-26-2007 08:47 AM

They do that because it gives players more incentive to play another time and because it's such a difficult bet that they think people deserve something for coming close. . . If you play the thing and lose by a nose in the last leg then the couple hundred bucks or whatever you get will be further motivation to play it again and cycle that money back in to the pool . . .

A certain % of the P6 pool goes into a 5 of 6 consolation pool for the reasons hockey gave above.
