Interesting race

Not to interupt the Preakness debates but check out race 4 at CD today. First time I ever saw a race where every horse in the race got claimed

Am I missing something? It looks like none of them got claimed.

EDIT: OOPS, yep I'm missing something. It opened race one when I clicked the link -- didn't realize you had linked the whole card, not just the one race.

With that said, wow, that is strange.

Chuck thats also the first time I ever saw that every horse got claimed out of a race. I also have question gor you. Can a trainer claim more than one horse out of the same race?

Scroll down to the 4th race

Cannon Shell 05-20-2007 02:23 PM

Also note the races are also being hand timed. Probably because the times that have been posted at CD this week have ranged from bizzare to just plain wrong. Apparently the guy who runs the timing devices is on vacation and an idiot is replacing.

Yea, I realized that afterwards -- thought the link was to an individual race and not the whole card.

Depends on the track but in KY you can claim more than one out of a race but cant put more than one claim in on any one horse even for different owners

Now check out race 7, same card. Tanyard Hill got claimed for $62,500...he got vanned off. Hope he's ok. Hope the new owners are ok too.

did not look good on the track

sumitas 05-20-2007 09:41 PM

i'm very sorry to hear that. so the claim stays then, right ? the new owners bear the brunt of this misfortune ?

Yeah, it sucks for them. He was pretty lame going into the van, they were holding up his leg before that.

CS:

Does the HBPA have an insurance deal where they pay half of catostophic losses in the event of a claim? Heard a rumor about that once, found it hard to believe.

In Ky and Fl they pay for 1/2 the claim price if the owner who made the claim has a signed card on file with the HBPA. There may be other states with the same deal. Of course they have to put the horse down in order to collect.

Thanks, I guess you can believe a little of what you hear.

Naturally this deal will cease to exist if the Jockeys Guild is sucessful in grabbing 1/2 the money that goes to the horsemans groups with their legislation sponsored by the 2 dopey congressmen.

The Guild is the best thing that ever happened to racing. That legislation scares the hell out of me. These things have a way of getting passed sometimes. Not that its a perfect example, but the boxing act comes to mind. Besides, what the hell do politicians know about the horse business? In Kentucky, nothing. The only thing most of our general assembly knows about the game is what they learned betting $2 to show on Pat Day at Keeneland once a year.

Very good point.

Also, I think the FL HBPA might have a cap on the benefit paid. I don't remember the details. Regardless, it's a great benefit that you hope to never have to use.

The problem with trying to use politicans to advance your cause is the danger of the pols using you to advance their agenda (often to your dismay)
If you play with fire, don't cry when you get burnt.

KY pols get interested in racing usually around the time they request a bunch of Derby boxes (comp of course) that used to go to owners and fans.
