All-time favorite Preakness?

We know what gets my vote.....but where does everyone else stand?
If you need a reminder, here are videos of three of the top contenders:

You know, that 1997 Belmont was just one wacky race. Who makes a move like that with 6f left in a 12f race?

Cajungator26 05-18-2007 09:07 AM

Silver Charm. I loved that horse.

For me it was when Louis Quortez won the Preakness. It was awesome. Pat Day got booted off his mount and then picked a mount up on LQ and took the field wire to wire.

Obviously 89 and 97...

But I'll add 95 too, It was nice seeing Timber Country finally fullfill the promise he showed at 2...

Here's a good video.. all the stretch runs of the Preakness from 89 to 06...

All three races were exciting moments in Horse Racing...but I give an edge to the Silver Charm race.

SundayStar 05-18-2007 09:39 AM

89 of course. 97 was a tremendous finish.

the last 4 have all been stirring emotional races for various reasons.

Danzig 05-18-2007 11:15 AM

gotta go with the sunday silence/easy goer preakness. two fantastic horses gutting it out, no one giving an inch, matching strides in perfect unison. that was a hell of a race.
worst? (other than last year) would be when codex and cordero carried genuine risk practically into the stands...

2005, Afleet Alex...still not sure how he stayed on his feet.

ddthetide 05-18-2007 11:24 AM

easily Afleet Alex. rise from his knees, give chase and win by 4. that was one of the best athletic feats ever!

Hickory Hill Hoff 05-18-2007 11:28 AM

'89...without a doubt, was a "classic"
a few others...
'91...Hansel returns with a vengeance!
'01...Point Given also returns, with a vengeance!!
'03...Funny Cide's 9 length romp! (plus I made a ton of $$$)
'05...the amazing Afleet Alex!

Yeah..you did pretty good that day. Tom's tomorrow. See you there? Or at the Fair?

Silver Charm, it was just a fabulous race.

somerfrost 05-18-2007 12:06 PM

I was at Pimlico to see the Silver Charm race, amazing finish! But my all time favorite has to be the 73 race when Secretariat suddenly decided to take over on the clubhouse turn, railbirds at Pimlico still talk about that move!

GenuineRisk 05-18-2007 12:24 PM

I have such memories of screaming at the tv in '89- Sunday Silence was my pick for the Derby, too, so I was really rooting for him. But that moment when Afleet Alex picked himself back up, pinned his ears and flew past Scrappy T was pretty amazing, too.

Eh, it's a dead heat.

Good call, I think that move was the craziest damn thing I have ever seen.
Making a last to first move on the FIRST turn of a 9.5f, G1 race.....is just nuts. I don't think any other horse in the history of the sport could have accelerated like that, and had enough left in the tank to pull away from a horse of Sham's caliber in the stretch.
The '89 race is my all time favorite race, but the '73 race is my all-time favorite performance by one horse.
I better include that video in this thread as well: http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...1973+Preakness

Oh my goodness, you have to watch the one entitled "Superhorse in the Preakness" or something like that- the whole race is set to the music from "Superman." Hilarious, and that's not taking anything away from what a great race it is to watch. The editor even made sure it was a big swell in the music when he makes the move at the first turn.

Thanks for posting the link!

The 73 Preakness is my favorite. If you want to go way back, the 62 running was featured in Sports Illustrated. The jockey on Ridan was Manny Ycaza (considered the dirtiest rider at that time). Greek Money was inside of him and ridden by Johnny Rotz. The featured picture showed Ycaza's elbow in Rotz's chest. Greek Money won.
