Xtra Heat has little girl

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/bre...urth-foal.aspx

I did a search and it didn't come up so forgive me if this's been crowed about already. She foaled an Unbridled's Song filly who's dark bay and was born April 24th. We'd talked about her boy's maiden win already but I didn't see a mention of this latest news.

She's supposed to be bred back to Songandaprayer. I mean I see what they're going for--speed speed speed--but the other stallions she's been bred to are far more expensive. Isn't this underbreeding? Not for what she cost originally but what she's worth now plus the other stallions she's been going to. It's not like Eclipse Award champs generally get penny pinched on when it comes to stallions and $45,000 is nothing to sneeze at but wouldn't it make sense to go for one close to $100,000? She's gone to Gone West ($125,000 in '07), Storm Cat ($500,000 in '07), Elusive Quality ($100,000), and Unbridled's Song ($200,000 in '07). That's an average of nearly $250,000 a breeding. Now to $45,000? Come to think of it, why's she still at ClassicStar? I thought they were in some sort of trouble.

Thanks for the update. She's one of my favorites.

Have you ever thought that perhaps her owners have some vested intrest in seeing Songandaprayer do well? They may own 10 shares of him or something. Just a thought.

What is with their love for Unbridled's Song? They breed to him, and now they want to breed to Songandaprayer, who is by Unbridled's Song?
Other than his one BC Distaff winner, has he actually sired much other than fragile horses that break down quickly and easily?
Maybe I am forgetting some other good ones, but even the good Unbridled's Songs I remember are horses like Buddha and Rockport Harbor, and they were not exactly the most sound horses in the world.

isn't songster by songandaprayer? maybe they expect big things, or as was said, they have shares in him.

Yes.

Songandaprayer was also the sire of What A Song---who was cut out to be a superstar sprinter/miler. After a record 20 3/5th work at Barretts March, he fetched $1.9 million, and defeated eventual 2yo champion Stevie Wonderboy in each of his first two career start.

He won the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar in career start #3..in hand and with a triple digit Beyer figure. He died a week later.

And it's a world record for fastest quarter mile ALL breeds (20.60 seconds.)

It's been bested a few times since mid April.

Three times over KEE's polytrack at the KEE April preview, and once at Barretts May over an equally souped up surface.

Oh. Oh well... fast nonetheless. :D

It's a shame that he broke down.

A Carson City (Hip #192) just worked 20 2/5ths at the Barretts May Sale.

A Lemon Drop Kid and a Yankee Gentleman worked 20 1/5 at the recent Keeneland Sale. Those two horses set the new world record.

A Quarter Horse has ran 20.6 before as well.

I like Unbridled's Song. Quite a few of his babies are extremely fast and a lot of them move well.

Her 2yr old colt out of Storm Cat just sold at the Keeneland April 2yr old in Training sale for 125K. Not sure what kind of deal they may have brokered for the stud fee but since the asking price is 500K I would be inclined to think they wanted to get more than 125K out of the colt.

Her Gone West colt (Southwestern Heat 3 yr old) has not done too bad. I think he is 7:2-0-3

Certainly Songandaprayer offspring are hot right now (at least in he sales ring) and while he is certainly not the caliber of what she has been bred to in the past its not unheardof.

I figure they expect the Songandaprayer foal to be like greased lightning so I can't blame them, it just struck me as odd regarding fee comparability. That Storm Cat colt must have the usual knee issues. If the conformation were decent wouldn't you expect a Storm Cat/Xtra Heat to be a highlight? I don't recall her conformational situation but seems like she was hardly flawless herself. Was it the pedigree that got the colt as far as it did? And no flaw too egregious?

citycat 05-15-2007 06:46 AM

The colt went in 10 flat at the preview day which was a nice fast time but you are right in that something must have been amiss for him to go for "only" 125K. I didnt get a good look at him because I was busy looking at others and knew he would be out of my price range on sale day.
