Hennegan's "1st Saturday" Film

Don't know how many of you caught Brad and John Hennegan on ATRAB yesterday discussing their soon-to-be-debuted "The First Saturday in May". The brothers followed dozens of 2006 Derby hopefuls from their juvy season, and ended up with 5 participants including Barbaro, Jazil, Sharp Humor, Lawyer Ron and Brother Derek. The film unspools at DeNiro's Tribeca Film Festival Derby Week, and theexcellent Flash website provides details on the project.

The brothers are going to the Festival looking for a distribution deal, and I don't know what we can do to help get the film into wide release, but it's had very positive responses from those that have seen it.

It's still early so I might be confused...so the only way so far you can see this documentery is to go to the film festival? :(

The good or bad news is the little cynic will be seeing the movie next Friday night.

Correct.

That little Romans kid in the movie looks like a trip. It says he is in elementary school (Schaffner Elementary) at a school about a block from the house I grew up in. Had I known there was a teacher there that lets kids skip school and go to the track in exchange for a bet.....

Speaking of little kids in movies, has anyone seen the short Funny or Die clip of Will Ferrell and the 2 yr old landlord? That's called "The Landlord" and I highly recommend it.

I like Dale Romans' kid.

Tell him I said "Hi".

Countin' the jack...he had a nice payout in his hand in that clip... looks like dad is taking advantage of "teachable moments."

Andy and I may end up being the only ones in the theater unless they advertise a little better, I didn't know anything about it until Steve put this up!!

I can't stand the way the Tribeca Film Festival is run. They withhold WAY too many tickets and release very few to the public. It's like some ridiculous NY insiders game. Total BS if you ask me. I go to very few movies there for that reason.

Too many movies as well....too much mediocrity overall.

Tell me about it, I just tried to buy a ticket on the website, "walk up sales only"

The only film I've ever seen at the Tribeca Film Festival was The Cooler, which was a fantastic movie. All the rest are too artsy and/or bizarre for my tastes.

The Cooler got horrible reviews...
I like the bizarre movies :)

The best thing I ever saw there was a screening of a movie Al Pacino made with Jerry Orbach called " Chinese Coffee " and I only got in because I ran into a friend of mine, who's connected, and she had tickets. De Niro and Pacino talked beforehand, which was cool, but the whole idea that the public basically can't get in turns me off. It's just too much of a pain in the azz.

I once bought tickets to a screening of a movie with a french actress I really like and she was supposed to be there for a Q&A and the tickets were fairly steep because of this. So, what happens....she doesn't show up. No apology, offer of refunds, just a letter from her and we were supposed to thank her for her consideration. It was preposterous. The movie was good but it also opened a week later and I could have seen it for a quarter of the price.

I don't even bother anymore and only bought tickets for this movie because I figured I might not get a chance to see it and it was available the day the tickets went on sale on-line. Most aren't even available then...and I'm talking the American Express advance sales. It's completely ridiculous.

It didn't get horrible reviews. I liked it until the ending.

Maria Bello is in it....that's pretty much enough for me.

Well not horrible, but not great either:

We actually almost bought it the other day and that is the only reason I remembered it.

'Cooler' was terrific.. A tremendous performance by the Bloviator himself, Alec Baldwin, being particularly memorable..
