Grand Slam a good bet

If you haven't tried this bet you should. Very easy again today. Paid $58.

I've seen the payouts for this bet at belmont but I have no idea what the grand slam bet is. Can you explain????

Thanks...

You need to pick the winner of the last leg.

For the first three legs the horse you pick must finish first, second, or third. Today the 7th race was tough unless you liked San Telmo but when a short priced horse win the last race, $58 is a gift.

That seems pretty easy....Well alot easier than the pick 4.

I assume the bet is 1 dollar and you can play multiple ways like a PK3 and 4?

It does seem like a good bet. It's never going to pay a ton but it would seem allot easier than a conventional pick 3 or 4.

Thanks for the explanation. Good Luck

I was stunned by the payout today.. I hit it 4 times. I know I didn't post it earlier, so you'll have to take me at my word. This was my play(s):

2/1,4/3,8,10/10 for $5 costing $30 (was a losing ticket)

I also covered myself with another ticket:

4,6/1,4/3,8,10/6 for $2 costing $24.... I caught both horses in the first two legs and the 8 in the 2rd leg totalling 4x the payout with a Minister's Bid win. :)

I was shocked to get 50-1+ on a horse that went off at 3/5... turned out to be a great bet, even thought it was my bet covering the other one!;)

I've become a huge fan of the grand slam, especially when there's a solid single in the last leg you know won't go off at better than 2-1...

You can't play that bet out in Cali?? That stinks.:(

Pointg5 06-22-2006 07:31 PM

Brisbet won't take it either, I emailed them, they told me there system was not set up for it. If they can do a pik 4, I don't understand why they can't do this, maybe they will add it later. I wanted to play it at River Downs, some of the old machines did not give you the option, but the newer machines did...

Bold:

When you play this bet, in general, is it better to play more horses in the first three legs in hopes of cashing multiple times, or it is best to spend more on the last??? I know it's tough to answer that question in a vacuum, but I was wondering if you had any thoughts.

Hoisttheflag 06-22-2006 07:57 PM

The pools are really small in that bet. It is a good bet for some action at a cheap price.

Hope you don't mind if I butt in.. So far, I've liked this bet when there's a horse I like to single in the last leg. If you can get to the final leg, you are pretty much guaranteed to get better "win" odds on that same horse than the posttime odds.

Here are three examples:

1) On belmont day, Cacique paid $6.40 to win... the Grand Slam paid nearly $50 for $2 (that's nearly 25-1, instead of 2-1) -- I missed on the 3rd leg, but dang.. nice payer!!

2) Last week, I did a $20 Grand Slam where I singled ALL four legs.. I was alive into the last leg with the 8/5 favorite MUSEEB... the willpay was $70!!!!.. he lost(and so did I), but the winner payout was $200+ for $2 ... If I had "backed up" my bet with an single-single-single-ALL for $2, it would have cost me just another $14... live and learn.

3) See my earlier post that demonstrates how I "learned" from my previous bets!!! ;)

So far, I haven't made a bet where I thought you needed to "spread" in the last leg... if I do, I imagine I will try to single the first three legs instead...

Thanks Zippy - those are the kinds of examples I was wondering about. I haven't played it yet - forget about it everytime I've been at the track- but the chances at multiple payouts seems intriguing.

Haven't gotten a chance to play this yet, but think I'll give it a whirl this weekend..

It is true like cloudy says, that if you play multiple horses in one leg and they all hit the board, that you cash multiple times?

whorstman 06-23-2006 08:22 AM

Can somebody explain this bet again. Your horse just has to hit the board? In the first 3 legs, is the last race the one you have to have the winner? Not sure if I fully understand it. Also, can you bet this at Churchill?

I like to play it when I can single a horse in the last race, but obviously sometimes the bet is to play all in the last race. Depends.
