Colonial Turf 1million

a less than stellar field for a 1 million dollar race, probably a reason why its ungraded

I will most likely be there on Saturday for the race Jerry.

If you see the cops tackle some dude running naked across the track, will you come bail a friend out of jail?:D

This tells us it is more important to get that Graded win. A trainer would rather win a $500k Grade I than a $1mm ungraded race. This is what is wrong with racing. Of course it all because of breeding.

The American Oaks started out the same way but the racing secretary did a great job of obtaining some great runners. The thing about Colonial Downs is probably the timing of the 3 yr old season in general with everything in a bit of a lull. I would at least think they would try to attract some of the European runners who werent quite of the Group 1 winning caliber

Jerry, I am looking forward to watching Go Between. Point Given baby won the Palm Beach Stakes at Gulf this winter. I loved his turn of foot that day. He was in a very tough 11 hole in his next out at Tampa and then lost to a very good Stream Cat following that.

It may be ungraded but it hasn't lacked in quality in recent years. Last year, English Channel won the race and in 2004 it was Kitten's Joy beating Artie Schiller.

As a bettor, I like the Graded Stakes committee's inconsistancy and sometimes lack of competence. When you see a Grade 1 race that is no better than Grade 3 in quality, you have some good candidates to bet against next out. Likewise, an ungraded stake that is worthy of a Grade 2 could produce some overlay candidates next out.

You are probably correct. I love The American Oaks. Isnt that run on July 4th weekend?

Hard to argue with the money though...having two $1 million races during the same meet. Pretty good for a track of Colonials "stature"

Seattleallstar 06-22-2006 10:40 AM

great point JJP, I was just about to bring that up

sumitas 06-22-2006 10:42 AM

how can a $1,000,000 race not be graded ?

Last year was the first year they ran the Colonial Turf Cup. It was a $500,000 last year. Double the purse $$$ this year.

GPK 06-22-2006 11:02 AM

OUTPERFORMANCE looks fairly good to me on the form. Violette/JJ at 10-1 ML

The field is actually not that bad. 5 pretty good horses in it if you ask me. Only one derby horse but it still has a couple that could be in a BC race in the fall.

JJP 06-22-2006 02:14 PM

Lewis Michael 15-1? That's a terrible morning line.

Seattle PLEASE try and learn something about the business before you make statements like this. The race hasn't met the criteria yet for number of consecutive years that it has to be run in order to go in front of the stakes committee. Incredible that you could speak so boldly without having any idea(obviously) how races actually attain graded status.
