Today's ATRAB may be the first racing show ever to end with a segment on Mr Ed, the talking horse

Got this from Wikipedia:

"Mister Ed was a zebra" hoax
In the 1990s, a parody of typical urban legends, created on purpose by the specialized site Snopes.com, said Mr. Ed was actually a zebra, not a horse, and was either painted a solid color for the series or else looked like a horse because of shortcomings of early black-and-white television. The story frequently pops up as a "little-known fact," but is not true. Mr. Ed was really an American Saddlebred.[1]

TV.com also agrees that Ed was a horse and not a zebra:
"Bamboo Harvester was a Palomino horse born in 1949 to The Harvester (a Saddlebreed) and Zetna. Prior to landing the title role of Mister Ed, he became trained as a show and parade horse by Lester Hilton, a Will Rogers protege.

He was only 12 years old when he became known to the world as Mister Ed, a role for which he was clearly typecast. He neither played, nor did he audition for any other role during his 19-year life. He never appeared on any commercials. He was introduced to the world in his peak role of Mister Ed.

As Mister Ed, he carefully protected the secret of how he could make his lips move. Many suspected liberal use of peanut butter, but that is pure speculation. He took this secret to his grave in 1968. He was euthanized two years after his show went off the air, a result of complications arising from old age."

Another site says the following, hopefully it's true:
"Shocking Theory" - Believes that Ed talked because his lips were zapped with short bursts of electricity that irritated his mouth just enough to make his lips move. But, since Lester "Les" Hilton, Ed's trainer was reported to be a very gentle and attentive caretaker, this theory can be put to rest"

did you ever use a "tens" unit (I have no idea how it is really spelled).. I had one after an accident for back pain.... It didn' t hurt but would/could make a muscle tense up. I could see that being done...

I say we examine the show footage and have a round table disscussion....:D

point given 03-01-2007 10:39 AM

one word peanutbutter

The official Mr. Ed site on AOL said that they used peanutbutter to make those mouth movements. Didn't specify whether it was smooth or chunky.
They also have a sound clip of the song for the show if you want to have some laffs on the show. :D

Anyone who could have thought Mr. Ed was a Zebra and not a horse would have to be a complete moron, how the hell could you not simply tell, uh... Zebras's do not have long forelocks, and black, coarse, short mane hair could hardly be dyed a silky white. I guess this is the reason there are more horse's asses than horses.

golfer 03-01-2007 01:02 PM

I think Steve would be the one who needs to respond to this!!:)

Samm 03-01-2007 01:41 PM
