Queen possible for KY Derby

the Queen of England that is.

from racingpost

AMERICAN horse racing's biggest day might be getting the royal treatment this year.

The US Secret Service in Kentucky is preparing for a "probable" visit from The Queen around the first weekend in May. The Kentucky Derby will be on Saturday, May 5.

Special agent Paul Johnson in the Secret Service's Louisville office said a royal visit to the state was an "expectation".

"A lot of her itinerary is very sketchy. We're in the preliminary stages," he said. The British government has already announced the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are planning to visit the US in May to mark the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Jamestown, but would not elaborate on her itinerary.
"We're of course aware of the speculation regarding the Queen's visit," a Buckingham Palace spokesman said, adding: "These things take a little while to finalise."

Racecourse spokesman John Asher said they were "aware of the possibility" of a visit by the Queen, but would not confirm whether she will attend the Derby. The Queen has visited Kentucky four times, in 1984, 1986, 1989and 1991, but has never attended the Derby, according to Mr Asher.

But her sister Princess Margaret attended in 1974.

It will be strange to hear Freddie Mercury singing 'My Old Kentucky Home.'

150,001---When I go to the Derby I need a decent seat, if I can't see the races, I can't see the point in going....I'm not there to party.

That would be a little tough...since he's been dead since '91

I don't want her to come. Nothing personal, but security is bad enough without someone like that.

I was @ Churchill the day before it came out in the Courier Journal. This helped explain the group of highly dressed people and uniformed officers touring the grounds.

blackthroatedwind 02-18-2007 08:39 PM

Do you think she prefers Ragozins or Thorographs?

ArlJim78 02-18-2007 08:42 PM

The big question is what is her position on polytrack.

I bet she's a frequent visitor at Lingfield so she's probably quite familiar with it.

The QM knows her stuff regarding horses. That would be good publicity if she showed up.

Perhaps she can do one of the live chats during Derby week.
The lineup can be Crist, Illman, Beyer, Queen.

The Queen, as people have stated certainly knows her racing.. she wouldnt be just another diplomat.. The English lads would prob know more about this, but the Queen Mother was a massive racing fan, especially Steeplechasing. She apparantly had the racing post delivered every to her every morning..

The Queen's nearest track is Windsor which is grass only, hasnt been changed to polytrack yet, it's a unique, shaped like a figure of 8!
