It might end up being a match-race after all!

Wow. :(

Pretty ridiculous a grade 2 worth 200k for 3 year olds this time of the year can only muster up 4 entries. Then again, when a handful of trainers have most of the horses this is what we are left with.

At least when the Derby field is cut to 20 the trainers/owners of the west coast horses on the bubble and then shut out can look back at this day.

It's a disgrace. How can you explain 123 horses nominated for the big point race, and 4 show up for the prep?

Perhaps its because its worth only 10 pts for the Derby if you win and trainers are looking down the road to races worth more points by have a fresher horse. You can blame CDI for that! Besides that how can they make Dubai Derby with so many points and not have the Illinois Derby worth zero?

It's Churchill's fault that a grade 2 prep only has 4 entries? How about blaming the horsemen for pretending their horses can only run by appointment?

I agree with you there that they keep horses in the barn too much. Just IMO they are waiting for the races that are 5 or 10 times the amount of points. A grade II race should be worth then 10pts, not where it falls on the calendar.

Were they afraid of running against Flashback?

The 123 noms are for the overall Santa Anita Derby series. You get eligible for it, the San Felipe and Lewis. Hammer said last Friday that he knew the Lewis was going to be light. I'm sure he'll explain what was happening with trainers decisions not to run on the show tomorrow.

I thought he was 20/1 when I went to Caesar's Palace in early January. I went up to bet on Flashback and found out he was suddenly 15/1. I still took it anyway.

There are several pools out there (offshore, vegas). Someplaces had him as high as 40-1 in January.
