Bondurant and McCracken are half brothers out of the mare Ivory Empress, who was a nice horse herself. These are her first 2 foals (or at least the first 2 to make the races)..

Indeed her first 2 foals.. Has 2yo Kearny County, a Stroll colt and With Dignity, a yearling Declaration of War filly behind them.

Is McCracken named for Sam McCracken the old Boston Globe turf writer ?

blackthroatedwind 02-08-2017 09:11 PM

Spelling is such an underrated art form.

Bondurant & McCraken have one of the all-time bloodlines via Ivory Empress.
The following legends appear in just one generation alone:

Bull Dog
Blue Larkspur
Count Fleet
Discovery
Man o' War
Mahmoud
Polynesian
Reigh Count
Sir Gallahad
Teddy

It would be cool for McCraken to continue on down the Derby trail just to see the pedigree folks dig deep.:zz:

If memory serves me correctly, Ivory Empress's second dam, Tuesday Evening, cost over a million bucks as a yearling. A huge amount for a Nodouble.

Nope. The Big Ern.

Purim66 02-09-2017 12:08 PM

Actually McCraken is named from the town that she (Mrs. Whitham) is from - McCraken, Kansas...........

knickslions2 02-09-2017 02:47 PM

I thought it was named after Phil McCracken?

Yes.. but that's spelled McCracken too, not McCraken. And there was no McCracken in the names book to block it from being spelled properly.

I think that town was named after Sam McCracken. :)

Tuesday Evening sold for $75K as a weanling to Frank Witham in 1983.

The million dollar yearling was the younger full sister (1984), who was basically never heard from again after being sent to Europe.

Betting against the misspelled horse with both fists!

Thanks. It had been awhile.

Actually once I first saw the spelling, I thought it was misspelled, too. I was hoping that she was a "Slapshot" fan and named him after Tim McCraken aka Dr. Hook but after seeing no Dickie Dunn or Ogie Ogilthorpe in the barn........

But hoping for all the best for this horse for the family and Ian.....

This Sam Davis is a fun race. Could easily see any of 7 different horses winning this one. Pace looks good and looking at Tapwrit getting in good position to run them down.

casp0555 02-11-2017 11:05 AM

I have an eye on the Union Rags colt outside...Delacour, Centeno, nice local works...if Centeno doesn't leave too much to do in the stretch, should be a nice price
