Thoughts on Derby 142

In an extremely heated derby-esque type pace - 22 and some bits 1st qtr, In today’s Ark Derby, the last chance to get to the BCJ champ Nyquist in Derby 142, Cupid, falls way short, and probably has fired his last bullet on the derby trail.
The big news is “NEWS” and his Steppenwolfer type traits.
NEWS closed big into what would be a derby 142 pace, and at 9f in the Ark Derby, was just short,
No doubt if the Oaklawn race ran another 220 yards, he would have been the grade 1 winner.

Don’t forget, Nyquist is Streetsense, 2 preps after juvy win.
Nyquist ran his first 2016 prep at SA in 120 for 7f..huh 120 ?.. yep…
So the big question is ,will NEWS get to Nyquist late.

How bout those Tapit/Pulpit colts..they just keep winning races,,,if its grey…put it in the tri !

I've been on the Whitmore and sbn bandwagon for months but nothing impressed me about today. They are both in first Saturday in may other then that they better crank it up cuz its going to take a jump to win

Secretriat34 04-16-2016 08:59 PM

Whitmore has been just short all spring, and no doubt will pick up some checks this summer, one to follow at the windows, in race like the penn derby,or somethig similar, they will run him in 142...why ? has no chance of a top three performance

they should skip 142 with him and try for maryland 2 weeks later at pimlico

Secretriat34 04-16-2016 09:00 PM

if NEWS falis in kentucky they may want to rest and go for belmont 5 weeks later

Pretty much everyone should be aiming for that race.

There are some worthy challengers for the Derby this year and I think there are 3-4 horses capable of winning it. Visually, Nyquist reminded me of A.P last year. Veering out in the stretch, still a little green with room for improvement and a big upside. definitely seems like the horse to beat right now.

...but I think if he makes it to the Belmont he can't run with that patch on his schnoz!

CUPIDS GONNA BREAK SOME FILLY'S HEARTS..LOTS OF THEM

DAM FINE LOOKIN SON OF TAPIT..

LOVE THE BLACK HAIR OVER THE GREY

Baffert confirmed a Daily Racing Form report earlier in the day that Cupid would miss the Derby and undergo surgery for an entrapped epiglottis. The 3-year-old Tapit colt, heavily favored in the Arkansas Derby, sat just off the early lead for a half-mile and then uncharacteristically backed through the field.

Cupid, winner of the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park in March for owners Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith, could resurface in the other Triple Crown events.

PREAKNESS PERHAPS ?

On Kentucky Derby 142 contender MOHAYMEN 's workout April 20 at Churchill Downs.

"That gave me goosebumps," Neal McLaughlin said. "That was a 'wow' breeze."

Shadwell Stable's son of Tapit (ANOTHER TAPIT SHEESH !) cruised a half-mile in :46 4/5 under exercise rider Miguel Jaime, the fastest of 27 works at the distance,
his first workout since struggling home fourth at 4-5 odds in the April 2 Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I).

Ooh. Wonder if Pletcher would consider the turf on this one after the Crown.

Because of the 0 finishes ITM in the Kentucky Derby by sons of Tapit? Or because of his woeful race himself in the Derby?
