What long shot do you remember the most? Whether you played it or not.

longshot
Play with Fire - Mark Hennig and Pabalo Fragraso at the SPA
They ran down spun sugar in the lane , horse paid $96 dollars |
Song and a Prayer in the 2001 Fountain of Youth. 17/1, clearly the speed of the race with Edgar Prado on a track that has always favored speed.
$200 to win. Funny story, 5 minutes before this race went off, I had $200 to win on a horse at Santa Anita called Oh Jazzy Day at 10/1. It was one of those 6 1/2 furlong turf sprints. He came to the top of the stretch with a 10-15 length lead, easy. I said to my friend, "Hes going to have to do a lot to lose this race", not 5 seconds later the horse hit the proverbial wall and started staggering like Oracle back in his college days. It was brutal to watch, he finished like 5th. |
IM DEFIANT starting from the 9 hole at Evangeline one night. First time starter and loved the way he looked in the post parade. Broke dead last from the gate but closed like a frieght train and flew by them all in the stretch to win at odds of 86-1.

Long before I was a fan (only six or seven at the time) Arcangues came in at 133/1 in the Classic under Jerry Bailey. Still love hearing him tell the story of that race, about how the connections gave him the race instructions in French (how true the story is i dont know) and he had no clue what they said to him. Didnt run much at all after that in the US though
"...here comes Arcangues to win in an absolute shocker!!! He's 99/1 in the $3,000,000 Classic!!!..." But.....my favorite longshot of all time is Rick's Natural Star in the 1996 BC Turf, but for some reason he was only 56/1 coming out of cheap claiming races in New Mexico, Arizona, etc. Dunno why he wasnt 1,000,000/1 - didnt have a chance in hell...stupid bettors! Anyone know why he ran in the BC by the way - never understood that placement |

Volponi.. even more than Arcangues. Didn't have but loved the horse.. Itsallgreektome.. Had him back-wheeled for monster exacta.. 2000 at Churchill was nuts.. A huge day.. The best in fact.. Spain.. 53-1? Missed her.. 28 min. later: Caressing.. 42-1? Had her $10 ATB. Me to BBQ Bill at CD, "Look at this Thunder Gulch filly that's 40-1.. Bill to me, "That's us!" 30 min. later: Northeast Bound.. 40-1? Bet him $10 ATB as Bill was pals with Bill Perry.. An hour later: Honest Lady.. 30-1? Had her under Kona Gold with Bet on Sunshine, More Than Ready and Came Home (maybe ?).. Only bet the triple though and it was a humdinger.. Would have had the Super had I bet it.. Oh.. And the 39-1 shot, exacta and triple in the Meadowlands 8th I gave out on the air three hours ago.. Didn't bet it, but Hooves and JJ's son did! |
Rockamundo '93 Arkansas Derby, Thunder Rumble '92 Jim Dandy, Colonial Colony '04 Stephen Foster.
Near-misses - Senor Speedy '91 Forego (winner Housebuster) |
The longest shot that I actually handicapped and wagered on was Musique Toujours in the Sunshine Millions Classic a few years back. I think he was a little more than 70 to 1.
|
Charasmatic in the Derby at 30-1. I had 20WPS and the exacta and tri.
Long ago when I first started this game I had very Subtle in the BCSPRINT. I think it was like 1988 or something. My favorite longshot was a horse nobody probably heard off called Summer Sale. The reason is I caught him 4 times at better than 10-1. He was a stakes and alw type horse a GG fields and I had him at 18-1 when he broke his madain. He was 18-1 the next time he ran in alw. event and he won again. This was before simalcasting... I happened to be in Reno and went into the sportsbook and noticed that Summer Sale was racing at Santa Anita on the Turf and again he was 20-1. i put 10 on him and he won again. And finally one more time in a stakes race at 12-1. I will remember that horse forever. he made me some $$$$$$$$. |
That I cashed on - Singletary in the '04 BC Mile
That I didn't cash on - Giac in the '05 Derby and Seek Gold this past Saturday |
Some 2 time G1 route winner in the 1995 Ky Derby at 25-1...can't remember the name;)
Also, Domedriver in the 2002 BC Mile at Arlington paying $54 |
Better Talk Now in the BC...big hit
Singletary same year Best of all was Pleasantly Perfect in the BC Classic. Only 14-1, but was a beautiful overlay off a 10-1 morning line. What a gift. |
Pleasant Home last years Distaff....raced against the bias at Keeneland in her last prep and had some back class...30-1 and saved me from a horrific day.
|
Mine would be throwing sprinter My Cousin Matt in my 2004 BC Sprint trifectas. Speighstown took it, followed by Kela and then My Cousin Matt clunked up for third at 62-1 or something wild like that. Threw him in solely because I liked his performance in person at Suffolk a few months earlier in the Moseley BC Sprint against Gators N Bears I think. Slightly lame angle, but the payout was $2800 for $2, only used a $20 tri key I think...
|
May B a Walk - A La-bred that I owned that beat Lone Star Derby winner TB Track Star in a Fair Grounds allowance race a few years back and paid $112.00...was a nice wagering payday for a college student :D
|
It's got to be VOLPONI!!! Remember if this horse hadn't won, the pik 6 scandal probably would not have been discovered and might be going on to this day killing all your big carryovers.
|
Far and away With a City at 48-1, RIP
Had the exacta, pick 3 , and pick 4. One of the best days of my life hearing Battaglia say With aaaaa Cittttty, gaaaaainnnnng ground. |
Proud Tower Too in the Malibu, Pleasant Home in the Distaff, Shining Energy in the Gamely and Aragorn in the Shoemaker Mile (that was a good day with those two) are the most memorable.:)
|
Tempera- I loved that filly and couldn't believe she was going off at double digit odds in the BC Juvenile Fillies. I was very confident that she would win and she did - I cashed a nice ticket, but honestly, I would have been over the moon with joy without the money. What a shame she died so young..........

No Allegiance a couple of weeks ago at Belmont. I think it went off at 26-1. Spain at Churchill and Cat Thief in the Classic. |
I think that Seek Gold should be remembered... good heavens, he was the LAST horse I would have looked at to win the Stephen Foster.
|
Sarava - 70-1. Belmont Stakes 2002
Drf read. Live Value Play. |
Ciskos' Kite at Pomona last summer 82=1 had em boxed...ran 1/2/4 and the dime super paid 32,300 bucks! Painfully...I kid you not
|
Well, mine has to be Last Tycoon in the 86 BCM...this was before the wagering pools were combined and he paid over $180 at Penn. I tried to talk my buddy into putting a few bucks on him but he laughed in my face...I swear he turned green when the horse crossed the finish line!
|
Still in therapy
OK, it was last year at Colonial and a 80-1 shot was catching the leader at the wire and he won...I swear he won....PHOTO sign goes up....waiting...waiting minutes seemed like hours and finally he's put up second.
NO WAY..I've got to see that photo...waiting...waiting...No Photo! W'll I called, e-mailed and they finally e-mailed me the photo and it's REALLT hard to see who won as there was a third horse in the mix but even looking at it MY HORSE WON. And I got ZIP.. BIG BUMMER:mad:  |

I also had "Broughshane" in an allowance race at Belmont Park the day before the Belmont Stakes in 2003. He was 20/1 and I had $60 to win on him. Not that huge of a hit but it felt kind of cool, he absolutely demolished the field.
He came back 2 1/2 months later to win again at Sartatoga at 7/1 and I had even more on him. Broughshane! |
The obvious ones I'll leave out.
Got Humoristic home last October at 29-1. Won for fun. Liked that one. A 10-1 winning gives me a good feeling. Doesn't have to be 40-1. Just a logical longshot. That's what the game is about. The best times are when the 40-1s are the most logical but that is rare. |
Randall, you need to start your own thread for all the longshots you have scored with and given out on here! Geez, BC Day last year alone.
|
There was a 60-1 shot at Hollywood a few weeks ago. He was the 9. I had $25 to blow from a small exacta and was seriously contemplating putting it all on him to win. Because I didn't want my dad to ridicule me for blowing $25 on that big of a long shot, I keyed a different horse instead. As they were loading them in to the gate- I looked at the nine and just knew he was going to win- he was much bigger and more athletic than all the other horses. I tried to change my bet (I was at the OTB) but didn't make it in time. Right at the wire, the 9 horse beat out the horse that I keyed. He would've paid $1500 for a $25 win bet. I felt so sick. Now everytime I see a 9 horse I cry a little bit. . . Hitting Deputy Kris at Hollywood last saturday felt ok though. . .

Thunder Gulch's derby win. How did he ever go off higher than 20-1? My fave one that I won with.
One I always remember hearing about on TV and maybe Sent to Stud knows about this horse was a horse named Burnt Chicken. Went off at like 100-1 in a race I think was at Calder. I remember saying if I ever see a horse at 100-1 I would atleast put $2 to win on it. :D |
