Best Race You've Seen In Person

Can be a big event or something else.

Mine would be the Meadowlands Cup that Gander won. As described by the Bigm in 2001 "Racing highlights included a blanket finish in the $500,000 Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup with Gander coming out a head in front of Broken Vow and Include."

I loved Gander and the entire stretch he fought off 2 horses--New York style--battling to the wire. Awesome race to see in person.

"Tiznow wins it for America!!!"

Wow, I wish I was there for Holy Bull's Travers. Sad thing is, I was in Saratoga that day but not at the track. Ugggh

Personal Ensign's BC.

But I've seen a lot of great ones.

I watched that race on the roof.

KirisClown 01-30-2007 09:19 PM

Holy Bull's 1994 Woodward.... it was an AMAZING day of racing...

Didn't you see Affirmed & Alydar? If I could take a step into a time machine....

Saw the Hopeful, Belmont and Travers. I also saw each race individually a few times.

randallscott35 01-30-2007 09:24 PM

Blushing K.D. was probably the most impressive filly I've seen in person. Saw her at Monmouth before she got hurt. Really really good.

saucon17 01-30-2007 09:25 PM

The two best iv'e seen in person Flanders and Serena's Song
Juvy Fillies BC and Inside Information win in the 1995 BC Distaff

POINTGIVEN1985 01-30-2007 09:26 PM

Victory Gallop/Behrens whitney... ten most wanted travers "cause i bet him heavy"... and number 1 is commentator

PeteMugg 01-30-2007 09:32 PM

I've got to go with Personal Ensign at the BC, also. Didn't think she was gonna get there.

ManilaRose 01-30-2007 09:33 PM

Excitement wise I would say '03 BC Turf dead heat between Johar and a favorite of mine High Chapparral. Performance wise, although skeptical about this race I would have to say Street Sense in the Juvenile.

The Indomitable DrugS 01-30-2007 09:34 PM

The Test Stakes with You and Carson Hallow was the most exciting race I've seen in person.

Antitrust32 01-30-2007 10:04 PM

i have a few favorites:

Victory Gallop Witney

Smarty Jones Preakness

Point Given Belmont (may be #1)

Bernardini Jim Dandy (got chills - yes i know it was a weak field)

Carson Hollow/You Test

Artax in the 99 sprint (Beat a great field - Kona Gold, Successful Appeal, Forestry, Vicar, Lexicon, Affirmed Success, Stravinski in 107 4/5)

tanner12oz 01-30-2007 10:07 PM

2005 preakness.... afleet alex fallin to his knees....regaining and winning strongly

Yes !! That is one of the greatest of all time !!!!

PSH 01-30-2007 10:32 PM

Affirmed Belmont

Affirmed/Alyday Belmont Stakes...

Recently, it was hard to top the Whitney last year with Invasor and Sun King

PSH

Hickory Hill Hoff 01-30-2007 10:35 PM

Many at Saratoga the last eight years, but my personal favorite was
Silverbulletday's Alabama victory in the rain.

mark2061mn 01-30-2007 10:43 PM

1985 strub

a fierce stretch drive from precisionist, greinton and the ever goofy gate dancer. this after precisionist set a sick pace and somehow found more.

Bigsmc 01-31-2007 04:30 AM

1991 Deputy Minister

Unbridled off a layoff after his BCC victory, turns back to a sprint and runs down Housebuster in the lane. Unbelievable closing kick.

Have to agree with PSH, last year's Whitney was awful exciting.

cmorioles 01-31-2007 05:15 AM

Haskell: Bet Twice, Alysheba, Lost Code noses apart at the wire
Preakness: Silver Charm, Free House, Captain Bodgit
Haskell: Forty Niner and Seeking the Gold in an epic battle

2Hot4TV 01-31-2007 07:02 AM

Spectacular Bid setting a track record at Santa Anita @ 1 1/4.

SentToStud 01-31-2007 07:09 AM

1976 Marlboro Cup. Forego running down Honest Pleasure from 10-12 lengths back carrying 137 in the slop.

I would pay good money to go back in time and be there for this.

slotdirt 01-31-2007 07:56 AM

Hmmm. The most impressive race I ever attended was definitely the 2005 Preakness.

kezeli 01-31-2007 08:32 AM

Absolutely the best race I ever saw was the first race I attended:
1989 Preakness Sunday Silence and Easy Goer. Locked in stride down the entire stretch! What a thrilling race! I've been hooked by this sport ever since.

WillSmith 01-31-2007 08:36 AM

1989 Sunday Silence wins Preakness. I bet on Easy Goer.. but a great race, one of the greatest stretch duels of all time.

slotdirt 01-31-2007 08:37 AM

This year's CompUSA Dixie was a pretty good one, as was last year's. Artie Hanger in a photo on both counts.

stonegossard 01-31-2007 08:43 AM

Brass Hat winning The Donn last year.

dellinger63 01-31-2007 08:52 AM

Most impressive race to me was Storm Flag Flying in her Juvi Filly race. Appeared at one point she was passed but gutted out a second move and as I said before, left a little part of her heart out on the Arlington home stretch.

Pointg5 01-31-2007 08:54 AM

1. Silver Charm and Wild Rush dead heat in the Kentucky Cup Classic, they ran a 124 Beyer that day, I believe it was the highest of 1998....

2. More Than Ready and High Yield in the 1999 Blue Grass Stakes...

3. Ghostzapper winning the Breeders Cup, just because I got to see him in person...

Gander 01-31-2007 09:00 AM

You & and the late great Carson Hollow in an epic battle at the greatest racetrack in the world. Summer of 2002 I believe.

Pedigree Ann 01-31-2007 09:06 AM

Maybe I was more impressionable when I was a youngster, but one that stands out in my mind was the 1971 San Juan Capistrano, when His Felinity, Cougar II (all turn to the south and bow low), came flying past turf champion Fort Marcy and drew out. I hugged a complete stranger that day, which if you knew me, you would find astonishing. I also saw Ack Ack win the San Antonio that year, but it didn't make the same impression on me. That was the difference between those two horses - Ack Ack was a workmanlike runner, while the Coug was a dramatic one.

Other races that come to mind are Agitate winning the Hollywood Derby (12f turf in the summer) over Stardust Mel, the filly La Zanzara winning the San Juan Capistrano over the guys (a damp, misty day), and the gutsy win of the 'pretty horsie' Solar Salute over the hulks Quack and Royal Owl in the Santa Anita Derby.

alysheba4 01-31-2007 09:07 AM

1988 santa anita handicap, alysheba getting the nod over ferdinand........sheba making one of the most awesome moves on the backstretch ever seen.

I would have loved to have seen that!

estreetposse 01-31-2007 09:24 AM

2005 Preakness: Afleet Alex

2001 Kentucky Derby: Monarchos

2001 Belmont: Point Given

really don't head to the track unless it's a really big day, no point really. Hate the crowds and 2 second trips to the fridge has beat out waiting in line 10+ min. and missing the post for a hot dog
