crazy...woman dies of water intoxication

I knew it was theoretically possible to die from too much water but I've never heard of it actually happening.

could be confused with Zacahary Taylor dying from cholera morbus....but maybe he contracted that from drinking too much water??? who knows...

Kasept 01-14-2007 05:09 PM

There was an episode of St. Elsewhere, I think, that dealt with this.. Guy would stand in the shower drinking gallons. I had never heard of it before and not again until now..

Many of the deaths of people on x-tacy are from drinking too much water.

Yeah, a hazing thing that got out of control.

yikes, I remember covering this topic in my law class. The radio station will probably face some lawsuits brought upon from their contest and sadly her death

Maybe....but usually everyone signs a waiver!

pgardn 01-14-2007 08:33 PM

Water is not toxic.

That is a really bad description. If one puts a saltwater fish in freshwater it will die as water will enter the cells and dilute the essential chemical reactions that keep cells alive. Some cells may even burst. But water is not toxic by definition. Very strange.

Her bladder may have ruptured and she may have died of internal hemmoraging... her kidneys which control water balance could have bled, or something like the aforementioned fish, but toxic? Nopes. I feel bad for the woman, but the article says they are waiting to determine the cause of death. Very strange.

Actually, waivers are really useless in cases like this... it's hard to sign away your right to not die :( Case law has shown that waivers don't apply when there is an unsafe condition that the person putting on the contest should have known about (and therefor not done)... this is the type of case that will never go before a jury because it will be settled out of court - the case of the Chico State fraternity pledge that died from water intoxication is the huge peice of evidence needed to win this civil case.

Very sad... the three kids probably wanted their Mom a lot more than they wanted a Wii :( :(

Thanks for the info...you hit it right on the head!

Just looked it up.

Its basically what I stated, too much water causingwater imbalance causing cells to swell. It does not fit the definition of a toxic substance though. Unfortunate name and incidents.

You're right from what I know of the subject... which explains why she complained of a headache before she died... from what I've read, it's the swelling that cause death, kind of like bruising... lousy way to go :(

The human body is amazing in that it tells you when things aren't right... aches and pains and headaches can't always be fixed with a pill, the question is, how do you know which instances require a trip to the hospital?
