BRIDGMOHAN: Out Indefinitely

Apprentice rider Jermaine Bridgmohan, fresh from smashing records and winning the jockey title at the recent Tropical at Calder meeting, will be sidelined indefinitely with multiple injuries sustained in a serious fall Wednesday at Gulfstream Park.

Thrown from 5th race mount Toms Mulligan, Bridgmohan suffered a broken collarbone and wrist, 2 broken ribs and a punctured lung, all on his right side according to Calder-based trainer Kim Graci. The accident occured on the first turn of the meet's first turf race, when the Robert Barbara trainee mistepped entering the backstretch while mid-pack and closest to the rail.

Toms Mulligan did not fall in the incident, but the younger brother of veteran pilot Shaun Bridgmohan pitched forward to the right with the stumble, and into the path of several trailing horses which appeared to trample the Jamaican native.

Transported to Regional Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, FL, where he remains and is resting comfortably, Bridgmohan never lost consciousness. The 18-year old entered the high profile Gulfstream season having set a mark for wins at the recently concluded Calder Fall-Winter meet and was the only rider named to a mount in every race on the card.

Jeez that's rough. These guys are nuts to ride. If I break my pinky toe I'm on the couch for a month.

eurobounce 01-04-2007 08:23 AM

I hope he recovers quickly. I only have watched him a couple of times but he seems to have immense talent. We have some really nice young jocks out there.

dellinger63 01-04-2007 09:34 AM

the best thing going for him is his age. Can you imagine say Earlie Fires trying to recoup from these injuries?

jpops757 01-04-2007 09:36 AM

Talmo is a 16yr old apprentice riding at the FG. Watch out.

lg1965 01-04-2007 10:06 AM

didn't somebody say this kid shouldn't be allowed to ride on the turf? i swear i read somebody post that. said the kid was a danger out there. needed to stay on the dirt until he learned a thing or two.

kentuckyrosesinmay 01-04-2007 10:08 AM

I hope that he has the fastest of recoveries. Injuries like these are not fun.

You have had them?

I hope he recovers quickly... sounds terrible!

Worse??????

The big grey thing you see me jumping in my avatar reared up, fell over sideways, and rolled over me once. I'm lucky I didn't die.

I still have nerve damage from the injury and am about 80% in my left leg and 90% in my right. Both of my hips weren't attached to my body (they hadn't moved out of place though so I didn't have to have surgery), my tail bone was broke down the middle, I broke two ribs on either side, broke my left shoulder, punctured lungs, and had severe nerve damage. My sciatic nerve was severed.

That horse has took me to both hell and heaven on Earth though. I still love him. I was back on him three months after my injury, but it took about six months before I could ride without any pain, and about a year to where I could post without stirrups again.

blackthroatedwind 01-04-2007 10:25 AM

Am I the only one looking forward to her post that details her accident worse than a broken collerbone, broken wrist, two broken ribs AND a punctured lung?

And I see you didn't disappoint.

Quite impressive. Not sure why you wouldn't still love your horse. It wasn't his fault.

Sounds awful...

I've been lucky... had two bad falls (one where my grey rolled on me and broke my tailbone OUCH) and one where I fell onto a jump. Besides my back problems, I have never had serious injuries. Horses are very dangerous. Worth it to me, but still dangerous.

Crickey, being trampled in a paddock was bad, but nothing like this. Pretty horse by the way.

kentuckyrosesinmay 01-04-2007 10:36 AM

Thanks. Now, I have never been trampled...I bet that was scary.

I remember my first fall the most...it took forever to hit the ground. My pony bolted and every few strides I lost a stirrup and rein. I seriously just wanted to get it over with, but couldn't imagine employing the skills you are taught in learning to fall, so instead I landed on my neck. :D 12 hands may not be very big, but when you're meeting the ground it seems a very long trip!

blackthroatedwind 01-04-2007 10:39 AM

I slipped on the way to the windows once and skinned my knee....but don't worry.....I still got all my bets in and was thus able to continue to fund the game.

OMG did you see a doctor?

kentuckyrosesinmay 01-04-2007 10:40 AM

I haven't had any extremely bad falls that were actually classified as falls since I was twelve when I broke my wrist. All the other times I have gotten hurt badly are when I was either on the ground or when the horse fell.

I got kicked in the face by a 2 yo once and had a broken nose. The bruised hoof print on my face was actually pretty funny. He wanted to give me beauty marks.

The next year, I had another 2 yo kick up at me in the stall at a show, and come down on my foot. That broke every single one of my toes, but I still managed to put on my tall boot and ride him in a dressage test the next day.

My middle finger is also crooked and I broke a bone in my hand one time too.

But, I train young horses so it is inevitable that I get hurt. I just always shrugged it off and got right back to doing what I loved to do as quickly as my body would allow me. Unconditional love...

you know, at your age it might be time to look into getting a courier like dixie has...to place your bets and run your errands for you

I will continue to put myself at risk to support the game I love.

It's a long way down for sure! When you get the wind knocked out of you it seems as if you're still landing, too. I haven't fallen in several years, but the last time I fell, I fell off of a 17.3 hand hanoverian. I didn't think I was ever going to hit the ground. LOL :D

What I admire most about myself is that the horse I bet, after incurring that horrible injury, lost and yet.....I still love him.

The first time I fell off was actually my first time on a horse. It was a warning sign from God that I didn't listen to saying don't ride the horses!...lol. I was very very very young, and on an old horse. Well, he tripped up and being an inexperienced young rider, I went right over his neck. He wan't very big either...about 14 hands...Thank God.

We could make "Dreamer II" out of this experience with a little artistic license. The horse, after learning of your fall, was so concerned he could barely run. He ran to you afterwards and nursed you to health to later win the Breeder's Cup Classic and complete your Pick 6.

Cajungator26 01-04-2007 10:50 AM

I used to wish that I'd fall and break my nose so I could get a nose job (only way insurance will cover it.) :o

I have a scar on my stomach from a weanling... he got me with both hind hooves! Thank God he was too young for shoes. Knocked the wind right out of me.

A fine idea.

John Cleese as the horse?

My sister broke her nose and we joke that she wouldn't be so beautiful if she hadn't. LOL
