Spoke to an old co-worker slash buddy just now on the phone and he brought up the night he introduced me to how steak is supposed to taste -

anyone else ever have a meal at this fine restaurant, The Hereford House in Kansas City?

What restaurant, anyplace in the United States, would you recommend as a "must stop"?

I like the Dobbin House in Gettysburg, Pa. With my current income it's a memory but if you don't mind a fairly expensive meal, it's as good as any!

I don't go for real elegant dining...but I don't mind having a great casual place that serves many things, and the steaks are superb! Claimjumper in various California cities...I would like to try Ruth Criss Steakhouse tho!

The Old Homestead Steak House in the Borgata was most excellent !

St. Elmo's in indianapolis is quite nice, supposed to be among the top 5 steakhouses in the country although slightly overpriced. Another lost cost alternative is shula's. You'll usually hear the announcers talk about it if they are here for MNF. A great deal of athletes and local entertainment frequent it, but its decently private and moderately priced.

When I was in KC as a P&G rep (1984-86), Hereford House was one of my calls. Quite good.. But there are several top steakhouses in and around Kansas City, and one not to miss is JESS & JIM'S down in Martin City, all the way south on Metcalf to about 135th St.. They cut and age their own steaks, and have one of the best baked potatoes in the country.. (Also in Martin City is Town House BBQ which is great and Smokestack (?) BBQ as well...)

If steak is your bag, and it's not mine, I can give you a couple of others:

OMAHA: Johnny's in the Yards is great.. Went there after a big day with my pal Phil on my only visit to Ak-Sar-Ben..

TAMPA: Bern's is one of the best in the country..

CHICAGO: I've mentioned Erie Cafe before, and I get the veal, but the steaks are tremendous..

RALIEGH: The Angus Barn is a legendary place.. While I was with P&G in Charlotte, had a great date there after a Winn-Dixie store opening with a girl named LuAnn Bowen who was a junior at NC State.. I actually don't remember the meal, but I remember LuAnn..

SAN DIEGO: Rainwater's is a fabulous place downtown, though I haven't been there in ages..

MONTREAL: Moishe's, the famed Kosher steakhouse.. Queue de Cheval, a 'newer' institution..

ALBANY: The Bears' is west of Albany in Duanesberg and is more or less a private club.. Chateaubriand (call ahead two days).. Jack's Oyster House, one of the oldest restaurants in the U.S., is still one of my favorite places too..

I love Gascogne, a teeny tiny Provençal restaurant in Chelsea here in NYC.

My favorite meal in NYC was at a place called Citron. The food was so good I actually got tears in my eyes when I tasted the dessert. And was really depressed when we left because the meal was over! Sadly, it's hard for a restaurant to get a foothold in the city and it didn't last.

I'm going there on Friday.

Any restaurant on Federal Hill in Providence, RI.

Favorite place for drinks in Saratoga; Grey Gelding, great wine list.

(Also Siros of course, unless the brunette bartender is working...she makes the world's worst mojito.)

Really like a place across the GW in NJ called Gristinis.
Up here in Saratoga I like the Wishing Well.(lobster bisque is a must have)
I like Don Pepe's near Aqueduct.
In Albany I like Jack's Oyster House.
Used to love a place in New Paltz called Barnaby's, don't know if its still there or not.
Little Italian place in Little Falls, NY called the Piccolo is great as well.
Schenectady has a MUST EAT place called Cornell's that serves the best Italian Bread north of NYC from the bakery next door called Perrecca's.

Fogo de Chao in Atlanta is probably my favorite. I also like Morton's Steak House (been to the ones in Orlando and Atlanta) and for breakfast, I love the Pancake Pantry in Nashville.

Has anyone been to Seasons 52? I think the only locations are in Florida and Georgia so far, but it was a Darden concept restaurant that has done pretty well. Good stuff... :)

I have been to Ruths Chris many times for lunch and a few times for dinner. My favorite meal to order there is the cajun prime rib dib. It is just the best ive ever had, you get this huge sandwich filled with perfectly cooked slices of prime rib. Usually, I tell them to add some swiss or cheddar cheese, also you get a platter full of their fries. For 20 dollars I really cant complain about my favorite meal for lunch. The crabcakes there are a bit bland, the steaks are very good but are really nothiing to rave over.

I've never had lunch there before... the location here in Orlando isn't open for lunch at all. I've been there twice and wasn't that impressed.

I forgot to mention earlier... the best steak I have ever had was at a small local place on Sanibel Island (FL) called The Sanibel Steak House. Best steak AND best chocolate martini I've ever had. :)

The Stoned Crab in the Bahamas is a great place to eat as well.

I celebrated my birthday the summer before last at The Wishing Well. The food was great but even better was the way they treated us. They had a great bartender (Bill ? ) . Out here on L.I. Ilike Captain Bills in Bay Shore. They serve excellent local seafood and the best oysters around. KP

Wow one can get very hungry from this post.These are some of the best meals i've ever had.

1-The hotel Misani outside St.Moritz,Switzerland.I was there in the late 60's visiting my granparents and ordered a pizza not knowing any better.They brought this thing out and the dough was flakey and the ingredients were so fresh it melted in your mouth.

2-Sabrina,a kosher restaurant in Paris.The year was 1971.To this day i still think about the salmon i had.

3-The Olive restaurant in Tel Aviv a block away from where Rabin was gunned down.Without a doubt the best Falafel i've ever had and a full table of all the stuff you wanted to put on top of it.

4-Ernestos-It was a small hole in the wall here in Queens that was family owned.The mother and father did all the cooking.The veal and chicken parmigiane was the best i've ever had,and if you didn'want the side of pasta they gave you extra veal or chicken at no extra charge.

5-The Red Basil in Stowe Vermont.Quite expensive but the sushi was like butter.

what a coincidence, a KC restaurant gets named on here. we have been here 3 times since this season has started. good stuff but not like some of the better restaurants in LA and Santa Monica.

GREAT food there! haven't been in a long time, but it's a beautiful place to go, and plenty of good food to be found.

Somerfrost's Dobbin House is very good too, it's like being in a w-burg taverns.
