Barbaro - Candiate for SI's Sportman of the Year

Just read this and apparently Barbaro's vet Dr Deam Richarson is a possible candiate as well. Here is the link to the story.

Good for racing!!!
Postive press and recognition of all the heart he showed both on and off the track and the pure class of the folks around him.
Of course Federer or Tiger will probably win it, but its nice for racing to have one in the running.

Afleet Alex was nominated last year, by Frank DeFord I believe.

You are correct. Frank loves racing. I love when he talks about watching Secretariate's last race on the turf. Frank is a good reporter and writer.

So you are saying that because it is Sports"MAN" that a woman couldn't win it either? HMMMMMM....

For what it's worth:

Online betting company, Sportsbook.com, has posted the odds on who will be crowned the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the year for 2006.

The two men who are front runners for the top spot of the most prestigious award in sport are Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.

Tiger Woods has received the award two times, once in 1996 and the other in 2000. He is the favorite to win again at 5-2,

I am joking.

"Man" doesn't always necessarily have to do with gender. Sometimes, it can mean human in the general sense.

I have to admit, I laughed my ASS off at this! LMAO!!! :D

If I belong in the kitchen, then there is definitely something wrong! HAHA!!!

It is amazing how my wife transforms into Suzy Home Maker when her grandmother comes to visit. Her Grandmother is 100% old schools. She will say that women should not anchor news, drive or work. She says women working is the reason why we have so many troubles. I am always told to keep my mouth shut when she comes to visit. It is a riot.

I was only teasing. But as for me being in the kitchen HA HA! My husband laughs at that. We would starve to death if he didn't cook. :)

A saying on a T-shirt reminds me of this situation...

A cowgirl is standing with a devilish look on a fence while holding a lariat. Her hair is blowing in the wind and she has that rough and ready look.

The T-shirt says:

"Do I look like I cook?"

kentuckyrosesinmay 11-29-2006 05:30 PM

On another note, I am very happy that Barbaro got nominated for this award.

uscrules 11-29-2006 06:27 PM

Since its been an off year in the major sports for real dominant stars, the award will go to Tiger or Federer. I dont think Tiger played enough to win this. Federer won 1 more major tournament and lost what 5 matches all year? 3 of them to the #2 player in the world. Tiger has already won this, time for someone new. nobody has dominated a sport like Federer has this year.

Absolutely not one other person you can make a case for.

Giving the award to a horse who only competed 5 months is lunacy. Its a plea of sympathy, lets be real. Theres been plenty of horses who have won 2 legs of racing's triple crown recently who never got a sniff of a mention. Then again they didnt break down in a huge race.

Actually giving the award to any horse is lunacy for that matter. Its an animal for crying out loud. It has no choice in the matter.

i disagree. barbaro captured a world wide audience, and hasn't lost it since the injury occurred. he's shown sheer determination, amazing intelligence for a horse, as well as strength and courage in his battle to survive. he's quite the ambassador for this sport. i don't think it's a sympathy vote, quite the opposite. rather a reward for showing such resilience. it's really an incredible story. he's overcome huge odds. he was only given a 5% chance to live once the laminitis was detected. altho many gave up, he never did.

uscrules 11-29-2006 07:18 PM

Your right Danzig and I cant really disagree with any of your thoughts. I love this horse and whats hes done for this game. Hes got a huge heart and is in your words a great ambassador to horse racing. Good post and I have changed my mind. It really was an incredible story, perhaps if it occured later in the year it would have been a more fresher on the mind of the sports world. But his story wont be forgotten ever.

Then I read Danzigs post, and I also changed my mind. Give it to Barbaro!!!
very persuasive danzig.

Sightseek 11-29-2006 07:50 PM

That would be fantastic if he won! I still hear updates on the local radio station from time to time.

paisjpq 11-29-2006 08:05 PM

somewhat off topic...
anyone else watch wire to wire? last week randy moss said that dr. richardson was also asked to be on the next edition of 'dancing with the stars' ....he's officially a celebrity.

Danzig 11-30-2006 07:10 PM

thanks uscrules and arljim. very kind of both of you.

i also saw that dancing with the stars contacted everyone's favorite vet. hope he turned them down. boy oh boy, the garbage on t.v. these days.

Hey! I loved the first season! John Hurley was totally robbed in the orignal finale.

I would have liked Barbaro to have won it, too. Has a horse ever won it other than Secretariat?

todko 12-04-2006 02:40 PM

Funny thing is, if you asked Tiger Woods or Roger Federer, they would probably both say, "Give it to Barbaro -- he deserves it more given what he's been through".

I believe there is a Franklin, Kentucky too. But I won't insult it and the people who live there. I've never been there . . . and they could all be fine warm generous people.

Not that he stands a snowball's chance in hell of winning but it would be an asbsolute joke if they gave it to a horse who is most famous for breaking his leg. Why not just give it to Donovan McNabb for blowing out his knee? No horse should even be considered for this award until they win the Triple Crown.

Believe me, I think anyone would rather lose at the track than spend time in Franklin Ohio.

no, he'd win it for being a top notch kentucky derby winning horse who then survived an injury that most would not have.
nice attitude.

Sorry but that isn't Sportsman of the year. If they have an award for Inspirational Athlete of the Year then he should absolutely be a candidate. Sportsman of the Year though, no way. Heck, he's not even Horse of the Year or 3yo of the Year.
