UPDATE! Holy reel-to-reel! I left "Kane" off the list... It's almost more of a 'document', like the Declaration of Independence, than a film...
1. Casablanca 2. GWTW 3. The Godfather, Part II Citizen Kane (tie) 4. The Bicycle Thief 5. Raging Bull 6. The Godfather 7. The Philadelphia Story 8. Sweet Smell of Success 9. Terms of Endearment 10. La Dolce Vida |
Kudos to both of your lists which include a number of my favorites..
All About Eve... Do the Right Thing... FHTE... 'Waterfront'... |

I don't watch a lot of movies so forgive me if my list is not very profound...and they are in no particular order...and let there be no misunderstanding...these are not my favorite films they are films that made me think...
birth of a nation triumph of the will jaws the godfather ET a clockwork orange no thinking...just great animal house christmas vacation caddyshack |

Raging Bull on the list! Some film historians feel a case can be made that Scorsese has made the Best Film of the 70's (Mean Streets), 80's (Raging Bull) and the 90's (GoodFellas)... It is tough to exclude Pulp Fiction... |
Here is few movies that I thought were pretty good
Fargo Field of Dreams American History X One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Apocalypse Now Deliverance |

I had 'Birth of a Nation' on the list initially but left it off in the final analysis... Films like the Griffith classic (1918?), Fritz Lang's films (Metropolis (1929), M (1930), etc., from the earliest periods in cinema (pre-Depression) are difficult to include on popular lists. 'Triumph of the Will', and all of Leni Reifenstahl's work has a whole other set of issues that I won't address here. All of the these are perhaps best placed on a list of Most Important Films or Most Influential Films. "M" is one of the greatest films you'll ever see and has been liberally drawn from for decades. See "Dark City" as soon as you can if you appreciate German Existential film... |
Number 1 on my list will always remain the same....the rest will vary, so I put them in no particular order
1. The Shawshank Redemption ("I believe in two things; discipline and the bible. Put your trust in the Lord, your ass belongs to me. Welcome to Shawshank.") the rest: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest PulpFiction Goodfellas Braveheart Gladiator The Elephant Man Full Metal Jacket Of Mice and Men Friday |

and they can be important and influential and STILL be on this list...because it is a PERSONAL list of films that made me think... |

I have no issue with Reifenstahl's craft, or the brilliance of 'Triumph' and 'Olympia' from a technical/artistic standpoint. But her utter refusal to fully acknowledge her role in the buildup of the pre-war Reich dooms her place in film history. It is not entirely different from Elia Kazan NEVER living down the "naming of names" during the HUAC hearings/Blacklist era. It's a lasting tarnish that skews the appreciation for the artist. |

These are the ones I have at the top of my favorites list and they fit for the made you think category as well. At least for me.
11) 2001-A Space Odyssey 10) Koyaanisqatsi 9) The Elephant Man 8) Raging Bull 7) It's a Wonderful Life 6) Rear Window 5) Schindlers List 4) The Straight Story 3) Big Night 2) The Grapes of Wrath 1) The Godfathers I and II |
In no particular order....
Chinatown The Godfather Paths of Glory The Grand Illusion Dr. Strangelove On the Waterfront Midnight Cowboy Raging Bull Treasure of the Sierra Madre McCabe and Mrs. Miller ( because I love Altman and he died last week ) |
Hi guys! I have been laid up for a bit between work and throwing my back out, I haven't been on the computer much lately. Now keep in mind, this is just my opinion and I have an odd taste in movies, they may not be the best critic wise, but they are movies that I will watch again and again and I own every single one on DVD.
1. The Black Stallion (in my opinion will always be #1) 2. The Shawshank Redemption (this movie is awesome and I will always leave it on if I see it on TV) 3. Sixteen Candles. (I SOOOO HAD A CRUSH ON JAKE RYAN) 4. The Cutting Edge (ok, I like romantic comedies. I admit it, but I LOVE this movie and I will also admit that I saw it in the theater THREE TIMES) 5. Pretty Woman (I also admit that I have many quotes from this movie that I use all the time!) 6. The Waterboy (this movie makes me laugh and laugh again. I probably know this movie word for word. My fave Adam Sandler movie.) 7. Clueless (also made me laugh and how many of us women use the saying "AS IF!") 8. Seabiscuit (loved the book and I loved the movie.) 9. The Breakfast Club (hee hee one of the girls at the barn told me a few weeks ago that she saw the BEST OLD MOVIE named "The Breakfast Club", how old did I feel?) 10. Caddyshack. (IT'S IN THE HOLE!) |

I love The Black Stallion, used to be near the top of my list but unforturnately I had to move it down a little in the order to make up for later additions. Its still in my top 15 though. The first hour or so on the island when its just the boy and the horse and no dialogue are stunningly beautiful and to me one of the most enjoyable sequences I've ever seen on film. The racing part is a little hokey but even so I get chills watching it every time. |

Watch the movie again and it will move up on your list. :) |

Reading these lists, one thing I find interesting is that you can look at someone else's list and see where they picked one or two of the same movies as your list, but then they have other movies that you find repulsive.

ANIMAL HOUSE THE BLUES BROTHERS THE STING THE GODFATHER I and II (does that count for two?) STAR WARS (IV - A new hope) BLAZING SADDLES NORTH BY NORTHWEST THE LONGEST YARD NETWORK STAR TREK (the Wrath of Khan) these are just some that come to mind... |

Animal House
Godfather 1 Godfather 2 The Sting Its a Wonderful Life Pulp Fiction Rocky 2 Goodfellas Casino Shawshank Redemption |
Self appointed movie snob.
1. Pulp Fiction 2. American Beauty 3. Godfather 4. Usual Suspects 5. Shawshank Redemption 6. Election- one of the best movies no one talks about 7. A Simple Plan 8. Godfather 2- I say I know it was you Fredo to my brother all the time 9. A Streetcar Named Desire 10. Guys and Dolls- Of course! |
blazing saddles is AWESOME. but then, anything by mel brooks is just that. an amazing guy, very talented. if comedy is as hard as they say to pull off, than i would nominate him as the all-time best at putting together top notch movies.
adore blazing saddles, as well as history of the world part 1. high anxiety and young frankenstein (that's frahnkentsteen) are so good. nothing, nothing in the world like a good comedy. top movies...20 years ago i'd have said gone with the wind. no more. seems the original soap opera to me. the book is so much better. but i'm a book nut, not a movie nut. godfather 1 is incredible. godfather 2 is a masterpiece. godfather 3 proves the bounce theory is valid. no way i can put together a proper top 10 list, a waste for me to try, much like naming good t.v. shows. i don't really watch anymore. |
