If it was a Don Guido speedie I'd start capping now

cal828 05-01-2022 01:37 PM

7 stakes on Friday and 8 on Saturday. I wish we could start capping now. I think only Oaklawn and Fairgrounds give you nearly a week to do your capping. I likely will ignore Friday and focus on Saturday and even that is pretty grueling if you handicap all the stakes that are offered unless you go the dark sciences route with your crystal ball or Weegee board.:eek:

Sorry Ruffian, Eel it has to be or it wouldn't be "DonGuido's Hudson River Eel Pizza, It's Eely Eely Good". You'll just have to pick the eel off and give it your cats but I will add extra anchovies for ya. I don't have anchivies though.

DonGuido 05-01-2022 05:31 PM

Enough pizza talk, let's get some spirited talk about who will win and why. I have no clue since I've been lying low for the past weeks. And who are the real live longshots for a possible upset. Sure, I can read or hear about it from the so called Experts but i trust everyone here more. :D

Post position draw will be on Monday (didn't it used to be on Wednesday in past years?) for both the Oaks and the Derby. After seeing exactly who will be running and from where, we will have plenty of time to overanalyze the race.

Knowing that a Hudson River Eel pizza is on the line, I'll 'cap extra diligently. Just hope it is from that part of the Hudson that has been cleaned up from the hazardous waste discharges of years gone by.

Ever since the Lexington, I've been trying to talk myself into believing that Tawny Port is truly fast enough to compete with this group. At this point, I like the horse and connections (and the likely price) very much, but know that he will need to run even better than his previous races. I do think that there is some upside to him. Hmmmm.

Originally it was Wednesday
~~~ Then it was Tuesday
~~~ Now it’s Monday

I called the track to be sure it wasn’t a misprint
He said they moved it to allow more people to get their information in

The actual DERBY draw won’t be till around maybe 2 o’clock
I think he said they start the draw for all the races around 11 AM ET

OR
Call The Racing Office there to ask

JolyB 05-01-2022 07:08 PM

I pulled this from a press release on the CD website. They have things timed down to the minute - even allowing 8 minutes for "banter".

I liked Tawny in the Lex, but as the talking heads say, "the waters get a bit deeper here." I think the interesting thing to me is I wasn't all that impressed with Cyberknife because the Arkansas Derby seemed to be one of the slower editions of that race in recent memory and his stablemate Zozos got a better figure in the Louisiana Derby racing at nearly the distance of the Derby beaten only a couple of lengths by Epicenter and I think that one set a track record, so how bad can Zozos be? But here's the thing that might give a person pause on Zozos and Tawny, Geroux rode all 3 and he goes with Cyberknife which totally muddies the picture on the Brad Cox runners.:zz:

Ye1 JB, my pizza eel is certified by EEG (Eely Eely Good, LLP) and guaranteed to be free of hazardous waste, radioactivity, and lethal bacteria with eels being caught in the crystal clear and meandering Hudson River waters far north of Albany.

Cal, the talking heads couldn't have said this any better. Like usual I'll study the PP's like I do every race and see how they run. Like going into the Super Bowl, the College Championships or the World Series . . . it's just another ball game.

Un Ojo ==> Out Of Derby

Dreams of a Kentucky Derby (G1) victory were dashed for some and sprang to life for others May 2, when Un Ojo was declared out of the race due to a bruised foot, allowing Ethereal Road to enter the body of the 20-horse field.

Not too surprising. I'm surprised the field has held up this well. Seems like in most years 3 or 4 will be lost in the final couple of weeks. Must admit, I didn't think he had much of a chance to win it, but long shots, especially those closer types like him often fill out one of the next 3 slots after the winner which makes picking the verticals almost impossible, at least for this player.:(:wf

Whatever floats your boat on those deep waters.:D In some respects, it is the same as any other race, but it is different in one unique way and that is the field is almost twice as big as any other race in North America which might be a reason to approach it differently in handicapping and betting or maybe not? Most of us here tend to do as Darryl Royal once said and "dance with the girl what brung us."

I think you already did. You know I'm just joking. Actually, I admire your abilities and wish I had them. You definitely have that "Hotel California" vibe going for you in your handicapping. In the meantime, I'll just have to stick with my silly old reasoned approach which probably doesn't make much sense in a sport that often seems unreasonable.

Hard to know what songs mean and sometimes I read things into them that are not meant to be there. I always pictured the Hotel California as being a mysterious place where black magic might be performed to keep a person there forever as in "you can never leave", but maybe that is wrong. Maybe it's more like the House of the Rising Sun in which there doesn't seem like any magic involved, but it is a place that robs a person of all humanity.

After looking at Saturday's entry list, I'm inclined to agree with you (other than one of my favorite wagers, the Oaks - Derby Double). Saturday's race card is nothing short of grueling. An active player will likely be exhausted, both physically, mentally and financially, by the end of the day. Churchill is offering 14 races over a period of 10 hours, with most races having very full fields. A cynical person would suggest that they were being greedy. When I have time I'll try to count the total number of horses who will be running - I'm sure that it is a large number.

Good that we can start the handicapping process earlier than in the past.

Real Quiet has kindly allowed us to include the Oaks/Derby Double in our ROI wagers. Other than that, I can't recall ever playing the Oaks card as a contest. The only time we do a two day contest is for the BC races.

Don't know about you, but I suspect that I'll be burned out after plowing through just the card for Derby Day. Our hardworking scorers will probably be also.

Yes, we always allow Oaks-Derby Double for ROI as one of your four wagers and no we do not add Oaks day to our Points contest. Definitely too much catnip Ruffian.

Yeah, it's a long day not just handicapping but scoring. But it's all good and fun. I used to have tickets every year for Oaks day and would arrive at Churchill before the first race. By the end of the day I was exhausted. Would spend Derby day at Keeneland for their wonderful buffet and it was a lot of fun. Have to admit, again, was exhausted by the end of the day.

I think what makes it so bad is how they extend the time between races later in the cards. Just keep it at 30 min. But I know they extend the time to bring in more betting money. Still, ugh.

Also, as is tradition, a KY Derby glass will be awarded to the Points Contest and ROI winners. :)
