2021 Hall of Fame Eligible Nominees
Horses: American Pharoah (1st year/eligibility), Blind Luck, Game On Dude, Havre de Grace, Kona Gold, Rags to Riches;
Trainers: Christophe Clement, Doug O'Neill, Todd Pletcher (1st year/eligibility); Jockey: Corey Nakatani ![]() |
I don’t have a problem with any of those.

Nakatani was money on turf and one of my favorites to bet on no matter what the odds were

Nominating Rags to Riches is particularly unfortunate. It's like giving a participation trophy to someone who barely ever participated. It's the Hall of Fame not the Hall of Horses I Really Liked.
Blind Luck is FAR more deserving, as is Kona Gold. |

30 starts, 14 wins and 7 seconds. Was 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the BC Sprint, multiple graded stakes wins including two grade 1’s. He travelled and from January of 1999 to November of 2001, he finished either 1st or 2nd in all his races. If he ran today people would be calling him the best sprinter ever. |

Even in this age of a billion available stakes races in service of the all might BC, what is there, like 4 or 5 open Grade 1 sprints on the calendar nationwide? Want to hazard a guess how many Grade 1s Safely Kept, Housebuster, and Groovy won in their careers? |

Imagine that |

Safely Kept won 24 of 31. That's deceiving somewhat because most of that wasn't in open competition. If she was facing open competition the majority of the time, he record wouldn't be as sparkling. Housebuster won 15 of 22 and was voted champion in two seasons, not one. Groovy, as brilliant as he was, was also under .500 and lost his two biggest tests. When I think of these horses, I think that Kona Gold fits in with them so if they are in, I can see him in too. My position would be more likely that none of them go in. Maybe Housebuster cause he was a champion in two seasons, not one. |
Simply saying Groovy didn't win half of his starts, and not knowing why, is ( frankly ) embarrassing, and disqualifies you from even discussing his merits.

Top class at 2, 3, and 4 from one of the best crops ever. Probably the most versatile of that group. I need to find a replay of the 1987 Whitney; judging by the running line, Jose Santos must have botched that ride. |

I hesitate to criticize Jolley and Brant, but they could have done what Lukas did and kept Gulch primarily sprinting. He would have amassed many more wins, though maybe not as much respect because he ran so well almost every time, even at routes. The funny thing is, when he won the Belmont Futurity, he wasn’t overly impressive - he barely held on over Demon’s Begone. The thought was that he was not going to get better as he matured, that he’d already peaked. He didn’t - Jolley did do a great job with him. Here’s the replay..it still stings, lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLfPL_GwlxU |

If Serena Williams won every preliminary match leading to the majors, great. But the majors are the biggest stages and she can't lose each time she gets on the biggest stage and just be forgiven because of what she did on the smaller ones. |

Make it stop please. The ONE time American Pharaoh got tested he got run down by Keen Ice.
You can’t compare other sports to racing when it comes to the HOF. They are not relatable at all. Not to be rude, but who cares what your HOF would look like? That’s not the discussion. The discussion s whether or not Kona Gold or Blind Luck should be in the current HOF. |

Since you know why his overall record is a poor way to evaluate him, feel free to explain why. Otherwise, I don't think you know. |

But it should be held against him. He doesn’t belong in the same hall as Nadal, Federer, and the Joker. This has nothing to do with how good he is. He’s not in the same class as those others. I feel like you devalue the greatness of the elite when you include the non-elite. Blind Luck, as good as she was, wasn’t in the same class with Go for Wand, Personal Ensign, Zenyatta, and Bayakoa.
But hey, this is why they have votes. To allow for opinions. If I have to look up your record or accomplishments or make a case for you, it’s a no. A hall of famer, to me, would be a horse or person that if you go around the room, everyone says yes right away. No looking up anything or thinking about anything. |

I just looked up Groovy's record after he ran in the Wood-KY Derby-Preakness....he was 10 for 15, and at races less than one mile he was 10 for 14.
Yes, he ran in the Derby and Preakness....and survived to tell the tale. He was a truly amazing horse, despite his 12 for 26 career record. |

Groovy's real crime was not starting the 1987 campaign sooner. Could have got revenge on Ogygian (who beat Groovy 3 times at 2 and 3) in the Bold Ruler. You beat one of those oft-injured superhorses that people go gaga for and you've punched your HOF ticket. If Groovy had registered a third 130+ Beyer Speed Figure it probably would have helped his case, too... |
