Now what......

Breeders Cup is done, the 3 year olds don't get going until Feb or so....so what on earth do we do now? I feel lost and sort of empty. I know that we have a couple good races left at Hollywood and Churchill but man, I am missing the rush I get when anticipating a big race.

i tend to dream about street sense breaking the juvy curse, which i've been doing all day and am convinced that he will do.

other than that, i enjoy the last few weeks of churchill and look forward to fairgrounds. something about john dooley calling races with a strange collection of LA-breds, kentucky and chicago horses all coming together at once is interesting and usually a good bang for the wagering buck

Coach Pants 11-07-2006 03:47 PM

Fairgrounds is back!! Should be a great meet.

the fairgrounds was already my fav winter meet but the fact their offering 350k a day in purses should make it that much better! normally youd think of this as the"dog days of racing" but in this sport theres no such thing in my opinion:)

disappearingdan_akaplaya 11-07-2006 03:50 PM

There is still the Cigar Mile and some other stakes races...

And, we can always dream of next year's Derby Winner...

NOBIZ LIKE SHOWBIZ:D

We also need to all keep an eye on all the two year olds racing because some good ones will continue to pop up here and there.

Racing never ends...:D

eurobounce 11-07-2006 03:56 PM

See i knew you people could get rid of my post breeders cup blues.

Carryover at Aqueduct tomorrow?
I know. I'm reaching... I feel the same way. Generally the months of December and January are my time off from the track.

I love Horse Racing in the winter, it provides mean escape from the winter blues. I love to go to Beulah Park on a dismal gray cold day in the winter here in Ohio and watch and wager on tracks in warm weather climates, especially Gulfstream. For some reason I do very well wagering on races at Gulfstream.

You truly can't learn to love this sport until you can learn to aprreciate the 5k claiming races at Mountaineer. It's the meat, the nuts n' bolts of racing. It still baffles me how so many of you guys refuse to even look at these races. IT'S WHERE THE REAL $$$ IS

dude, i had ZERO shame playing 2500N3L races at Portland Meadows when I was there. It was so easy to win, I couldn't stand it. The only thing I hated were the exotics -- sometimes a combo that should pay $800-ish would pay about $180, and sometimes a trifecta that should pay $125 would be on the board at $600.

Made no sense, but it sure was easy to take down a huge part of the pool if you liked any longshot in a superfecta -- if you had a huge longshot in there, you'd likely only need to get the first three right and collect the "ALL" payoff in the fourth spot. It's too much fun. I'm going to start looking at mountaineer.

DESHAWN!!! :D I'll play DeShawn's mounts at Mountaineer til the sun comes up. HAHA! :p

There is DCat to look forward to in the next few weeks. You can also follow steeplechase racing over here.. It's so good.. It keeps the heart warm over winter!

Kid swears by it, so it must be true

For me, gambling season is probably over until the new year. I still scan the form every few days for some possible big scores, but I gamble on the ponies Jan-Breeders Cup and lower the profile during the holidays. The girl likes her gifts ya know...

;)

ArlJim78 11-07-2006 07:12 PM

I like to play some of the small tracks this time of year. Some I have a feel for while I find others just baffling. Some that I get a feel on are Mountaineer, Turfway, and Tampa Bay.

One way i look at it is like this is training in order to stay sharp and to practice good money management skills. Of course you don't handicap them like you would high end horses but it forces you to work hard to find winners.

Plus its just plain fun.

Think about it these topics that are sure to pop up in these rooms:

Barbaro deserves the three-year-old Eclipse Award over Bernardini

McLaughlin should get the best trainer Eclipse over Pletcher

You'll have people arguing for Dettori to win over JR, Garrett, and Edgar

Bushfire vs. Pine Island?

Should there be an Eclipse for best Chat Room Avatar?

Henny for best sprinter

Next superhorse?

Favorite P-Track surface?

There is plenty to keep us busy.

Jay Privman has a write up on DRF discussing Discreet Cat as a possible sprint champion if he wins the Cigar mile. This really pisses me off. I like Discreet Cat quite a bit, but he has done nothing to warrant an Eclipse award yet. Especially in the sprint division. Even if he smokes the Cigar mile field, its still a one turn mile, not a true sprint race.

I'm for Bordonaro, Siren Lure, or possibly Thor's Echo, should he win the De Frances.

Favorite P-track? Dunno yet. I live about 15 min from Turfway and have been able to see alot of that surface, so I am getting somewhat used to handicapping it. Not familiar enough with Hollywood and Keeneland yet.

Sightseek 11-07-2006 08:49 PM

I was just saying this tonight....as if Daylight Savings Time and the cold isn't bad enough...we hit the slow season of racing too. :(

Slow season? did you forget about Penn National?:D

I usually get ready for Tampa and Fairgrounds.Tampa ALWAYS has some real juicy mutuels, and Fairgrounds will be strong this year,so watch for the good ones to come out.One thing I am wondering about is if Eddie Martin is going to ride Fairgrounds or Aqueduct.I see his name at Aqueduct again for the wednesday card in the seventh race.

He would be the first sprint champion that never won a stakes sprinting!

Exactly! WHY is he even being mentioned???

I can not figure out why the Met mile and cigar mile are considered "sprints" when determining th title. Thye are middle distance races, not sprints. They have sprint characteristics but if you look in the NYRA condition book index they are under the "long" not "short" .

Yes. I agree totally. This very situation was played out by Speightstown and Pico Central. Distressingly, unitl Pico lost the Cigar mile, he was NOT out of the running. What the hell? The 2 biggest sprint (dirt) races in the world are the BC Sprint and the Dubai World Cup Sprint, both at 6 furlongs. A SPRINT does not = a one turn mile....

Just put in slots and all the troubles will go away...race tracks mantra...hey maybe it'll work there too?

YES. Why not. That glazed over look seems to work wonders elsewhere.....

4 weeks from this Saturday....can't wait.

Dec. 9 until the first Sunday in May is my "on" time not my down time.

The rest of the year is just goofing around trying to hit a nice P4 or P6.
