Gets underway on Wednesday, if anyone is interested. I usually play, but it is a very tough contest and I often drop out after I bury myself with poor picks. Similar to our contest in that you get a hundred bucks, but no exotics. All W-P-S. Contest is mostly made up of turf races. It usually starts with the Oceanside. I started another thread under Contests. Put your picks there, if you like and we'll see how long any of us lasts(probably won't be long for me).:wf Or put your picks here, that'll work too.

Thanks for posting this notice Cal. You're correct that this is a very tough contest and it can wear you out. Since it is not an elimination contest, you can keep plugging away no matter how poorly the first week or two goes. I find that as I fall further and further back in the standings, I will try more and more for that price play that will instantaneously catapult me back into contention (there is a 25-1 cap). That hasn't worked out so far.:(

I'll often start out by "Dutching" the contest race, placing, say, $55 to win on one pick and $45 to win on another. That gives me at least the illusion that I'm not doing a bad job of handicapping.

With Del Mar merchandise prizes awarded to the top 50, it only takes one or two price horses to get into a prize position.

It is worth noting that unlike our ROI, if you have a losing wager, it will be subtracted from your total, so negative scores are possible.

Actually, I like that one and she would have been my second pick. Chalky picks for me so far and I imagine I won't get anywhere near 4-1 on my pick with Mike S. riding, but he just rides when he wants to and this one figures from a pace angle. Finally got back into positive territory with a winning wager on Castle yesterday. Had been in the red since the second day on the contest. Now "just" need a 12-1 winner to catapult into a prize position. Nothing's impossible, is it?

Me too. I think I was down around number 2500. Still way down, but went up 1700 with wins in the last two races and back to positive territory.

On another subject, are you playing in the BeatByk contest?

Yes. I got a late start but finally made the playoffs by joining Byk on Got Stormy yesterday. I'm going to keep trying for additional entries and the bargain priced NHC membership if I can actually beat his pick. Trying today with Rockemperor.

I can't tell exactly when in September the finals will be. Clearly, there will be many players.

Hope I don’t jinx you. I went with Rock Emperor too. Furious rally from him in last race and gets a better post, but don’t know whether that matters because with his style, may be last anyway. Also considered the Aidan O’Brien runner. First lasix, big weight break, etc. May change later. Hard to go against Chad though.
