The future for Gulfstream = Pegasus

Now there will be no reason for not making a trip to Gulfstream Park and his name is PEGASUS !

" Gulfstream Park has seen its share of financial adversity, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the racetrack and retail center’s latest bid for reinvention looks so epic.

Next year, the owners plan to install a giant Pegasus statue 11 stories tall, with the bronze-and-steel winged horse trampling an equally massive dragon at its feet. Stretching 220 feet long and shipped in 60 packing containers from China, the $30 million statue represents Gulfstream’s boldest venture yet: the centerpiece of a planned destination called Pegasus Park, which eventually could bring in Ferris wheels and water slides to beef up the current draws of dining, shopping, slot machines and horse racing.

“This will be the biggest attraction south of Orlando,” said Gulfstream general manager Tim Ritvo......... :zz:

Yes you'd hope it would at least have some beauty or movement or well.... something!

This, however, is what they're planning. :wf

Man if I had $30. mill I would SO wanna sent it to China for one of these static and lifeless eyesores.

Why do we have to ruin a good thing with gaudy sculptures, unsightly ferris wheels and tacky water slides?

robfla 01-29-2014 04:26 PM

JHC - what a waste of money! - and from CHINA no less! Why not spend to 30 mil in the USA?

I think Pimlico should commission a gigantic statue of Kegasus.

Sightseek 02-03-2014 01:06 PM

In yet another bad use of money...just saw a tweet that the Ms. Racing Queen gets $100K. What benefit does a Ms. Racing Queen have to racing? :zz:

Don't see a lot of crossover business from the water slide but the scenery might be a plus.

A statue of Avon Barksdale would be better.

per Tim Ritvo "The Pegasus was erected to block out the sun on the apron and grandstand, giving our fans a much needed 10 degree temperature break"

It looks hollow.

This makes perfect sense cause every time it's a tad too sunny I enjoy building a Pegasus defeating a dragon for shade.

(I just keep thinking your quote would have been funnier if he had said "erected to block out the sun and destroy humankind", but that's just me).

This could be the first time in history that a large number of people from a rival nation hide inside a hollow horse and attack the SAMS machines after dark.

Trojan horse?

I do hope that somebody did the engineering analysis to make sure that that thing is hurricane proof. Especially since it is hollow - large shards of material blowing in unpredictable directions is not something we need.

Is the statue gelded?

Monarchos1 09-17-2014 10:59 AM

I was in So. FL last weekend and saw this hideous statue. There are certainly less expense and more attractive ways to offer shade to patrons. The worst result of this, IMO, is the huge price hike this year hitting some of the track's best customers. Prices for the boxes have been more than doubled to $25,000 and suits upped from $35,000 to $75,000. Clearly those folks are being stuck for a large portion of the bill for this absurd statue. I'm guessing that other seating options will be increased, as well.

hey, it could have been a statue of the owner.

robfla 09-17-2014 11:30 AM

I don't think it's to offer customers shade...

"Pegasus is the centerpiece of a planned destination called Pegasus Park, which eventually could bring in Ferris wheels and water slides to beef up the current draws of dining, shopping, slot machines and horse racing.

“This will be the biggest attraction south of Orlando,” said Gulfstream general manager Tim Ritvo.

....." Now, Gulfstream wants to emphasize fun more than fashion and beef up its entertainment options. The summer of 2013 was the first to have weekend races, ending Gulfstream’s seasonal schedule in hopes of creating more traffic for the property. The park plans to expand its spectator grandstand with the goal of winning back the prestigious Breeder’s Cup."

Well yeah... that's one of the layers of ridiculousness of the shade line since they've talked about Pegasus Park  from the beginning.

Maybe, if they do manage to get the BC, they could take a page from Win and You're In and have something like Losing Ride 'N' Slide for the jocks with flames coming from the doomed dragons mouth and stuff.

I would so wish Brice Blanc had a BC mount...

It is South Florida--there is no such thing as bad taste here. It is no different than the moving artwork at Marlins Park--an expression of the owners ego, take it or leave it.
