shame on you, IOC!
|
Ugh.
Really disappointing stance from the IOC. :( |
Why aren't there calls for boycotting? Surely our gay athletes will boycott and not conform, no?
|
|
Ironic we boycotted the Russian Olympics in 1980 because they invaded Afghanistan and now 33 years later we're in Afghanistan and ignoring their anti-gay, draconian laws.
We need to say we're not showing unless openly gay folks are treated identical to open hetero folks, in other words fast forward socially a few decades. Surely support of gay Americans rank above that of the Afghanis, no? Rainbow colored nails just doesn't seem to cut it. IMO |
no, we shouldn't boycott unless the athletes say 'boycott'. the 1980 boycott certainly wasn't supported by many in this country, and was generally thought to be a bad move.

you're forgetting that many parts of this country still have draconian laws regarding homosexuals.
also, the way to change things is from within. perform, show you're just as capable as 'straight' folks. it's just like when you say 'leave the church'-no, if enough people demand change, it will change. look at how civil rights have been gained in this country; certainly wasn't done by people leaving the country. |

IMO an all-out boycott would/will make a far greater impact including economically than 'performing, to show you're just as capable as 'straight' folks' |

Oh that makes it all better. The law is to protect Russian children from 'non-traditional sexual relations'. Wonder how Mr. Mutko feels about gays adopting? BTW The female pole vault athlete who painted her nails in rainbow colors in the preliminary was warned and was wearing all red nails in the finals. What is next? Super-secret rainbow underwear? Boycott and let the NHL run their schedule unimpeded. :) |

If say Egypt held the Olympics and they warned of wearing crosses or making the sign of the cross would we boycott or just succumb? |
the athletes shouldn't boycott.
the ticket buyers should. |

Russia Has The Only Non Gay Mens Figure Skaters:confused:

Take a page from history, like when Jesse Owens smoked Hitler's "Master Race" athletes and the rest of the world at the track and field events in 1936. Let the performance of the athletes do the talking. And if some of our gold medalists happen to be gay, great. They can thank whomever they like and say whatever they want on TV. They will be interviewed extensively for the TV networks. What's Russia going to do about that? Nothing.

i applaud obama's decision to appoint billie jean king and caitlin cahow to our olympic delegation! great idea.
|
brian boitano came out, he's on the delegation also. but, i thought him being gay was old news.
|
Now if the President could just bring himself to say he's not going because of Russian policies towards homosexuality instead of 'his schedule doesn't permit it.'
Can't wait to see what he has planned the 2nd and 3rd weeks of February. |
