Most Talented 3yo since the 90's?
Are we all ready to hand over the award to Bernardini? Still living in the Smarty Party? Do you like your 3yo's to be Real Quiet? A late blooming Tiznow?
Who would you rate as the most talented 3 year old since 1990? |
It is a tie for me. Victory Gallop or Concern. My two personal faves.
|
US based? Holy bull without a doubt.
|
Barbaro, dominate on turf and dirt as a 3yo and his Derby win puts him a the top.
|
If I remember correctly, Candy Ride was still technically 3 years old when he smoked Medaglia d'Oro in the Pacific Classic. If so, he was easily the most talented 3-year-old I've seen in a long, long time.

Point Given Preakness, Belmont, Haskell, Travers nuff said

Really tough to seperate Point Given, Holy Bull, and Bernandini. Those three were freaks in the spring/summer. Tiznow certainly closed the year with a bang.
|
Holy Bull.
|
easy goer.

Looking at only the 3 Year Old Season:

I liked him too. He would be in my top 5 of the 90s. |
More fun would be best 3 Year Old Season Ever:
Man O' War (undefeated and beat the Triple Crown winner in a match race) Citation (15 in a row, sweeps the Triple Crown and wins at distances from 6 furlongs to 2 miles in the JCGC) Secretariat (he lost the Wood and the Whitney remember) |

I'd have to say since 1990, the top 3YOs would be Point Given, Unbridled and Silver Charm. |
1. Lammtarra
2. Go for Wand 3. Smarty Jones 4. Giant's Causeway 5. Rock of Gibraltar 6. Bernardini 7. Holy Bull 8. Point Given 9. Thunder Gulch 10. Serena's Song Note-I think that Arazi would have been on this list with proper handling because he had the talent but unfortunately, never got to show his best. To make the list, u have to have talent PLUS accomplishments. Lion Heart was also very nearly on this list. Had he not gotten hurt, he would have won the Travers and that, along with the Haskell win, would have been enough to make it. |

I wish that we could have seen more from Afleet Alex, Smarty Jones, and Charismatic... Bernardini may be on the top of that list for me by the end of the year... |
A.P. Indy, Holy Bull, Bernardini

He was such a big chestnut, and when he walked past me on his way to his Travers, it was a moment I'll never forget. |
Kelly Kip. The Allen Jerken's charge was something of beauty to watch. I dont think we ever got a chance to see the very best from this horse either, a little mismanaged in my opinion. I saw this horse workout a few times and lets just say he turned quite a few heads.
|
Point Given for me too (I've only been following since the mid 90's)
|
point given
barbaro smarty holy bull ap indy |
Smarty Jones
Point Given Skip Away |
Smarty Jones ran numbers on the sheets that were unbelievable.
And his finest race ever was the Belmont where he got tag teamed by two future grade one winners, and put them away to the point where they stopped to a walk!!! while he continued to fight on and get beat by a perfect trip horse who came back and won the Travers. He was by far the best three year old since Easy Goer/Sunday Silence, and probably better than those as well. You take a look at his sheet numbers and you just can't believe how fast he was. I don't know that I will see a three year old like that again in my lifetime. |

I agree with you on Kelly Kip. He's now the #4 NY sire. He's still owned by H A J (Hobeau Farm). He stands at HighCliff for a very reasonable fee. Impressive in every way, though I don't think many remember him. Here's what he looks like now. http://www.highcliff.com/registry_images/kelly_kip.html |
Absolutely gorgeous, thanks for the pic!
War Front is a nice sprinter, the best one Allen has had since then. Lets hope he gets Allen a BC win this year  |
