I Feel Badly For......

Larry and Tom.

While I'm well aware it's a very small part of the big picture.

I was really interested in hearing how they both called the race.

I found myself getting nervous for them. Also have spent that last week or so wondering how I'd do, what I'd want to say.

Must be incredibly deflating for both of them.

This news so sucks!!

hoovesupsideyourhead 06-08-2012 12:34 PM

they still have to call the race..but no tc .

Port Conway Lane 06-08-2012 12:39 PM

This one I can comment on. It will mean ZERO to both of them.

Just another race.

Of course it shouldn't be that way. It's the Belmont after all.

If it were me. I'd wish I didn't have to call it at all.

I know that sounds crazy but I'll bet that's the way they both feel.

Coach Pants 06-08-2012 01:03 PM

I wonder if they get choked up during the funeral procession? I hope NYRA management flies in a few musicians from the HBO series Treme for it. Someone close to them pass that along.

Here is how I envision Vic's planned Triple Crown Call...

Quote:

And lets see, you had better take a look at I'll Have Another! He's a Chestnut like Secretariat with a noseband just like Seattle Slew's.

I'll Have Another is 4th right now, but could soon be into 2nd.

And there he goes!! and slingshots past rivals with the speed of Count Fleet, the class of Citation, and the heart of Affirmed!! I'll have another is about to ASSAULT the record books and look at him WHIRLAWAY from them like a GALLANT FOX!!!

I'll Have Another is STRAIGHT AND STRONG and he strides away!! He might win from here to OMAHA!! Is this the biggest Cinderella story since when Sir Barton broke his maiden in the Kentucky Derby? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand where your coming from Vic. It's human nature to have those feelings, i mean let's face it they're calls would have been part of potential history as well. It's just stinks for them, and all involved, just terrible news. :(

Alabama Stakes 06-08-2012 01:45 PM

You said you "have spent that last week or so wondering how I'd call the race, what I'd want to say."

So, tell us.

I really don't know. Anything planned to say would probably have been only one line and only if he had won. Would have thought about various ways the race could unfold. Solicited ideas from friends, family, fellow announcers and maybe you guys as well.

As for thinking about it. I would have been working on preperation. Knowing every horse and jockey and silk days before. Something anictdotal about each horse.

Knowing the fastest and slowest fractional times at every split.

Thinking about how to control my nerves, stress and breathing. Announcers can move too early and have nothing left for the stretch at Belmont as well.

Reminding myself that calling the race is exactly where I've worked so hard to get. Remember to have fun.

Praying not to say something wrong or stupid that would be re-played forever.

Don't judge me, Coachie, and I know it's dumb but there's no way I'll be able to watch him leading out the field without my eyes welling up.

There is just no way.

Stupidly that has never occured to me... that you guys must have that on your collective minds on big race days...

The next time calling a Triple Crown race for a national audience is "just another race" might be a sign you don't have the interest to be in the game.

It's the 144th running of a legendary test in the sport. I think it would be an honor for anyone who donned the mic to have the opportunity.

If you were a real announcer you'd understand that statement.

Try it. It's enjoyable.

Better get back to pandering.

I don't think that's an attack at all. But understand if you do.

We're all upset.

This scratch soooooooo sucks!

So saying he isn't a real announcer was supposed to be a compliment?

No. It means that until having called at this level he can't know what a desvastating blow it is to lose the chance.

If it was me I'd try to be professional but my heart would be aching. Rare indeed is the time to have the opportunity and privledge to be a part of something that could be part of history. Calls that will be replayed long after we're gone.

Becasue of that. Sadly it becomes just another race.

I truly wish I didn't feel that way. But I do.

Vic is right, and I really appreciate his honesty here...in fact it's worse than just another race..There can't even be an historic "upset" here...It's the BC Marathon Lite...Slapping the name "Belmont Stakes" on it doesn't make it special. Most of these horses will have a hard time winning overnight stakes, let alone Grade I's...

This race will gon down in history as "The 2012 Belmont* Stakes" (*=somebody had to win or yeah but, who did he beat?)

I know it's not politically correct to infer it let alone say it, but it's just become a screwy 1.5 mile allowance race at the end of a long day, with the "Belmont" name attached to it.

Only SLIGHTLY redeeming value is that it's not too bad of a betting race now

I don't think you read this entire thread. What you just spoke of has nothing to do with what we're discussing.

I hate no one.

There is one thing I do hate.

Anyone feel bad for the horse that wins tomorrow? It will be hard to shake the asterisk that will go along with winning.

100 % yes. You're totally right and it'll be completely unfair.
