Spring to the Sky's debut might have been my favorite one of the year. . . not sure how I feel about the spotting without a prep, but he interests me.

VOL JACK 10-23-2011 10:15 PM

Where are all the Filly & Mares?

The Sprint and the Distaff are coming up thin.

I think finding a dirt prep in between was problematic.

Them finishing their respective races would be considered surprises.

Nope. . . It's a European horse. Don't want to say more until I talk to him. . .

From Thoroughbred Daily News

Celebrity chef Bobby Flay revealed yesterday that he has purchased French listed stakes winner Dear Lavinia (Grand Slam) from owner/breeder Joseph Allen, and will enter her in the Nov. 4 GII Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Flay got his first taste of Breeders’ Cup glory when More Than Real (More Than Ready)--also acquired by private purchase--won the Juvenile Fillies Turf last term. “Dear Lavinia was brought to our attention by bloodstock agent Michel Zerolo, who does a lot of good work bringing horses from Europe to the United States,” Flay told the TDN. “The thing that most impressed us was how consistent she’s been during her first five races--she’s won three times with a second and a third. She’s already a stakes winner, and she’s always right there. We also liked the fact that she’s a late foal, so there’s lots of upside going forward.”

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, the bay finished a close third to G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) in a Listed event at Deauville in July, and most recently annexed the 7 1/2-furlong Grand Criterium de Bordeaux at Bordeaux le Bouscat Oct. 13 (video). Flay said that a defense of More Than Real’s Breeders’ Cup title was not a factor in the decision to purchase Dear Lavinia, explaining, “I’m always on the look-out for young fillies that have some capabilities, and this one just sort of came up at the last second.” Flay’s new acqusition will arrive in the States on Saturday.

Super Espresso (Medaglia d’Oro) and Her Smile (Include) will also carry Flay’s silks on Breeders’ Cup Friday. The former has been pre-entered in the GI Ladies’ Classic, while the latter will go in the GI Filly and Mare Sprint. “I think the Ladies’ Classic is a wide-open race if Havre de Grace goes in the Classic,” noted Flay. “The Filly and Mare Sprint also looks like it will be wide open--Turbulent Descent (Congrats) is very fast and will probably be favored, but Her Smile is just sort of learning to run at these distances. We bought her as a distance filly, but we dropped her back to six furlongs for the GI Prioress S. and she won. I draw a line right through the Charles Town Oaks [last time Sept. 17]--there was a lot of bumping and it’s an odd race with the way the turns are there.”

Alan07 10-25-2011 03:21 AM

She Digs Me wasn't pre-entered in Juvenile Sprint according to CD Monday notes.

Just the idea that they are even considering running Stopshoppingmaria in the turf makes me feel Todd has zero confidence in her.

Dahoss 10-25-2011 04:45 PM

I know I'm really reaching, but how about Champagne D'oro in the Filly and Mare Sprint? The Princess Rooney was an ambitious spot off the break and she actually ran pretty well there considering she was pretty close to a pace that totally collapsed, it was her first race in 6 months and she was in tight turning for home.

In the Honorable Miss she was up against it on a drying out track that seemed to favor inside speed. Then she was stretched out (not really sure why) for her last two. At Monmouth she was reserved off the lead wide and seemed to just sort of give up. But last time she did some running, on the engine the entire way and although the race was farther than she wants to go, she ran deceptively well I think. Now she shortens up to what is probably her best distance and might be rounding back into her best form.

Obviously if Turbulent Descent shows up with her "A" game they are all likely running for 2nd, but do you really want a short price on her? I think all of the gaps (as planned as they may be) are a concern. Tanda seems interesting also considering the ride she got in her lone dirt start.

Not just considering.. JF Turf is her preference.

Who is "her" the filly? What does she know she is a horse. She is 1100 lbs with the brain as large as a cell phone

You don't hear Pletcher talk about his stock like this too often...

Quote:

“We’ll work her over the grass this weekend and then make a decision as to which race she’ll run in,” Pletcher said. “She’s by More Than Ready, and More Than Readys have been very successful on the grass. We felt her race in the Frizette was not quite as good as we’d expected, and although she worked well on Sunday, she didn’t gallop out as strongly as she has before. By pre-entering her in both races, it puts us in a position to have as many options as possible.”

Good stuff. Maybe she's having a reaction to lasix. A surface switch should help.

The KHRC and BC committee don't need to worry about another Life At Ten incident. I think he's learned his lesson. He realizes now he should have run Life At Ten in the Filly and Mare Turf.

Lately, he seems a bit more forthcoming and honest when he's been interviewed about his stock.

The other day I read him say something about not being happy with a workout for one of his 2yos, for instance.

Looking like the early candidate for worst Breeder's Cup opinion.

Mawhip 10-25-2011 09:59 PM

I just looked at her PP's and I was wrong. Certainly not the worst opinion. Didn't realize how bad this field is other than Turbulent Decent who is hard to trust like you said.

In FM Sprint Golden Mystery 2/4 at the distance and trained by the miracle worker Juan Carlos Guerrero for which she is 2/2 with. I will pay up to have her on my ticket and not kick myself in the ass when Juan Carlos works his magic.

They all have a shot in that race. Well maybe not all of them, Turbulent Descent is a total toss for me.
