Trivia

This horse was claimed for 35K as a 2-for-15 runner and got hot. He shares a name with a DT poster.

Name him.

RolloTomasi 02-21-2011 10:01 PM

King Glorious.

blackthroatedwind 02-21-2011 10:01 PM

The mighty Cannon Shell.

Chester Ross gave it away. Good one.

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 10:04 PM

Correct.

Travis Stone 02-21-2011 10:06 PM

Why did Ayarza's weight shift between starts? Does the subscript indicate bug weights in these old PPs?

I think that number represents the post position in the old charts.

Travis Stone 02-21-2011 10:08 PM

I feel lost looking at PPs w/out Beyer figs... shows how much of a staple they've become in handicapping (at least in mine).

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 10:13 PM

Won his debut at Calder - asked to carry 17lbs more than Cannon Shell in the Carter.

Name him.

Name him.

I don't know which I remember more, his amazing battle with Fit to Fight in the 1984 Met Mile, or seeing him break down that summer at Saratoga. So sad. Such a freak.

A Phenom

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 10:18 PM

A Phenomenon is correct.

blackthroatedwind 02-21-2011 10:18 PM

I had forgotten, by the way, that he won the Jim Dandy.

He was an amazing horse. Amazing.

Good old Inosencio

What was so amazing about him? I honestly have no recollection of him at all, though I remember Fit to Fight pretty well.

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 10:25 PM

Came into a very tough looking 1978 Ky Derby with an undefeated record ...

Correct - he had a nice March of his 3yo season ... won the Hutcheson in 1:20 and change by 5 lengths and beat easy Wood Memorial winner Believe It in the Fountain of Youth. He ended up 20-14-1-2 for his career.

Affirmed and Alydar really seperated themselves from some pretty nice horses within the crop.

Sensitive Prince seperated himself pretty well from Affirmed at the eighth pole in the Jim Dandy. Still one of the most impressive finishes I've seen in a race like that.

blackthroatedwind 02-21-2011 10:42 PM

Believe It would be a superstar these days. Darby Creek Road was no slouch either.

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 10:54 PM

Here's one I've never seen before - this is the sire of Cigar before his start in the '85 BC Mile.

Never even knew Biancone trained for Paulson for that matter.

blackthroatedwind 02-21-2011 10:58 PM

Wow, he was pretty good. That was only a couple of years after All Along's Championship run. Patrick was a big deal back then.

The Indomitable DrugS 02-21-2011 11:03 PM

About to taste defeat in the BC Distaff ....

Name her.

Yeah, Palace Music was a runner.

Seeing those names he ran against, wow, it really puts our current turf racing into clear focus.

Name her.

Lady's Secret. Life's Magic, her stablemate, beat her.

I did take the 10:1 in the Test however. She beat Mom's Command ( and some Greentree horse ).

Indian Charlie 02-21-2011 11:12 PM

Grey 3yo filly owned by Klein. Gave it away.

Well, when one person buys most of the good bloodlines, and then either doesn't race them or ruins them, top class racing goes down the toilet.

I didn't even look at the pps....it was sort of obvious by the question. At least to old timers like me.

Well, yeah, it was obvious, however, he bothered to block out that she was bred in Oklahoma, while leaving up the 3yo grey filly portion of her pps.

There was an incredible collection of Euro imports in the '85 Breeders Cup.

That was when Theatrical made his US debut. Besides him - Pebbles, Strawberry Road, Lashkari, and Triptych all entered in the BC Turf.

Strawberry Road was also Biancone - so Biancone trained both the sire and damsire of Cigar.

Correct.

Life's Magic was also 2nd in the '84 distaff - albeit beaten a pole by the 120 Beyer of Princess Rooney.

Theatrical got a nice ride that day.

She also lost to Bounding Basque, and Tony " never knew the rail " Graell, in the Brooklyn.

Who was the best Texas bred you can recall?

I didn't know Strawberry Road sired Solar Slew!

As for Palace Music, did you notice that in his one really bad race, he got trounced by the grandsire of one of the greatest horses of the last 30 years?

The other race he finished poorly, 4th by 9, he got beat by the underrated and forgotten Commanche Run.

I was going to say Banner Bob, but I think he was a Ky bred on further reflection.

I guess Groovy, though I was no fan of his. I have a feeling I am forgetting someone pretty obvious.

How about you?

No, it's Groovy.

He was freakishly good. He beat Turkoman at 7F as a 3YO....and Turkoman was good fresh. This was all after running in the Derby I think. They tried, but they couldn't ruin him.

Graell rode a bunch of winners that my father trained in Cleveland. He swears he was the best of a good Thistledown room in the 80's.

He was the King of Thistle.

I still see him around fairly often.

I'm sure not the best Texas Bred ... but there was a good one in the Carter with Cannon Shell and A Phenomenon...

"The great Ann-Tone" even rode him.

Maudlin won the race after Summing won the Belmont.

I suck.
