Lady's Secret to air on ESPN

ESPN is planning to air Zenyatta's run in the Lady's Secret live.

The Thoroughbred Times did a story, but their site is down. They reported it on their Facebook page, so I copied the link for whenever it comes back up: http://bit.ly/bhWbs7. I'm sure it'll be up on ESPN.com eventually.

Well now it won't be a secret.

That's good to hear (and i'd say that if it were one of Rachels races as well).

Come on, ESPN... do this right. Make it positive. Give those casual, I-only-watch-the-Derby types something memorable and exciting.

I'm all for the Woodbine way... focusing on the $...

... but since no one is doing that here, lets try it this way and get them hooked.

(... and for the love of God don't show the crackpot chantleader).

Try live cow.

Sighty will vouch for them.

The Indomitable DrugS 09-27-2010 10:18 PM

Why would they show that race? There will be several big races that day far more interesting than a 1/20 favorite running against a few hopeless tomato cans.

They are just setting the stage for the Breeders Cup viewership. She wins the Lady Secret and more people come back to ESPN to watch her run in the Breeders Cup. For them its better than showing JCGC with virtual no-namers
ESPN and other TV channels do not cater to bettors as evident in thier camera angles during the race and side reporting of TV chefs

Wow

TouchOfGrey 09-27-2010 11:01 PM

The coverage is from 6:00pm to 7:30pm EST on ESPN Classic, so presumably they are showing more races than just the Lady's Secret.

For those that get MSG Plus, they will be showing Belmont races (including the JCGP) from 5:00pm to 6:00pm EST.

My digital cable box thing says it's showing the Yellow Ribbon, Goodwood, Lady's Secret, and Norfolk. The bad news for me, we've had some issues with our box lately and I don't get ESPN Classic right now. So goody, I get all excited (well -ish) and then it's not on the more frequently watched ESPN proper. Maybe it's just me, but scheduling live events for a channel with the word "classic" in the title is jumping the gun a bit. Maybe ESPN Niche is more accurate for how they view the situation.

The good news, the ESPN main channel is supposed to break in to show the Lady's Secret. Of course calracing.com shows things on the live feed, so it's not like I won't get to see the rest. If the commentating on tv achieves new highs or lows, I respectfully request that someone inform me of it for the purpose of mocking or celebration as the situation demands.

you might want to check your programming. espn classic suddenly disappeared from my line up after years of having it. it was put in the nfl red zone package, so now i have it back. not sure if that is what's happening with you of course.

Thats what I thought- 6 races from Indiana to NY and they pick Zenyatta at 1/50 against 3 horses on the polycrap
and
like eajinabi said-the JCGC has a bunch of no namers(Blame,Rail Trip,Fly Down):D

Coach Pants 09-28-2010 09:33 AM

It's on ESPN Classic?

LOL. This sport is on the f.uckin OCHO!

Big deal.

I wish it were that simple, but thanks for the suggestion. No, it's a technical problem, and since we're debating switching services (shh don't tell the s.o.b.'s at Charter) we don't want to wait on their guys to come around and mess with whatever they said they needed to do to fix the signal for everything between BBC America and HBO's 1 thru 6. It sounds complicated. Can I sign up for a satellite dish and then hit them with it? As long as it wouldn't break the dish, I think I would get some enjoyment out of that. They gave us Showtime, Starz, and some HD channels to make up for it, so there's that.

I just saw this on Time Warner Cable (Queens):
Effective September 21, 2010

Please note: ESPN Classic is now offered on our Time Warner Cable Sports Pass. If you are not already a Sports Pass customer, please call 877-453-5295 to upgrade.

I guess ESPN Classic is no longer part of their standard digital package. No wonder I wasn't able to set my DVR to record it.

ESPN showing this race? Get ready for tape delay coverage of the race due to the extended coverage of cricket.

Cricket will always have 100 times more fans than horse racing

They have to keep restocking their fans because the matches last so long that many die of boredom before the conclusion.

Looks like ESPN is bringing in their own guy to call the races...Larry Collmus. Good choice. I always liked the guy.

http://www.thebigm.com/blogs.aspx

"Hats off to my golfing partner Larry Collmus, the voice of Monmouth Park, who’ll be calling Zenyatta’s next race for ESPN, and once again he’ll be Trevor Denman’s Breeders Cup back-up at Churchill Downs.

Undefeated in 18 career starts, the great Zenyatta is scheduled to race in the Grade 1 $250,000 Lady’s Secret Stakes at Hollywood Park on October 2.

I’m very happy for Larry, who’s such a dedicated and respected professional."

Dahoss 09-30-2010 09:58 AM

Very happy for Larry. Warkentin is right....he is a dedicated and respected professional.

HaloWishingwell 10-01-2010 12:05 PM

Thumbs up for larry

smartbid09 10-01-2010 12:21 PM

Congrats Larry!

Breaks my heart. First Larry get's Vic's job at GP, now this. IMO Collmus couldn't warm Vic up.

Nothing like a hit and run poster with an agenda. This was your first post since this:

ESPN and Gulfstream seem to think differently.

Coach Pants 10-01-2010 11:40 PM

I bet they met at an interstate rest stop.

countrydick 10-01-2010 11:55 PM

Funny, I also looked to see what my last post was and saw that. I'm a busy guy. Normally I scroll around and someone else will say what I'm thinking, so no worries.

I guess i get fired up about this topic because we're talking about someone who's just about a monotone vs someone who adds real excitement to the races. JMO

Did you mean perfervid?

I admit, I had to look that one up.

Characterized by intense emotion is what it means.

Alan07 10-24-2010 12:29 AM

Question..

Why does the BC need Larry to be Trevor's back-up? Wouldn't Mark Johnson fill that role?

Indian Charlie 10-24-2010 12:35 AM

I would pay $100 to have Smoothie Operator be the official caller of the BCC, if Z actually runs in the race.

He'd either blow an artery in his brain if she won, or commit suicide on air if she lost.

It would be a win win situation for everyone involved, especially Smoothie himself.

Just guessing here, but maybe Larry has a contract with ESPN. Didn't Larry call a few races for ESPN a few weeks ago?
