Biggest U.S. stallion bargains

Who do you think provides the best ROI relative to stud fee? Considering how many quality NYBs he's thrown, I think Freud at $6,500 is like stealing.

ROI in terms of what? He is a good regional sire but his purse numbers are of course inflated since most of it is earned in restricted company. Outside of Fanny Freud has he ever sired a really good horse?

I'm not talking about throwing superstars, I'm talking about earning the most money on the track relative to stud fee. Seems like Freud has a new NYB stakes favorite every week.

Do you know who he is a half to? Do you think it means anything?

He is clearly the best of the NY stallions. His fee is low because his babies aren't commercially attractive and he has become a strictly breed to run sire. Which isn't a knock. But he is a good NY stallion relative to the usual NY stallion.

He's a full, Lauren Stich.

LOL, your right. EVEN BETTER.

NTamm1215 08-29-2010 07:12 PM

Afleet Alex at 15k looks like a decent deal. Of course, I could imagine his fee is going to go up.

Following in Birdstones footsteps. Remember last year when people actually thought Birdstone was a good sire? To be fair AA looks like he has a little more depth to his crop and might be a lot more legit. I would guess his fee will go to 35k. Birdstone may stand for 5k next year.

I agree about the depth, at least AA has had sprint winners, route winners, turf winners, etc. This year's results for Birdstone are absolutely frightening. His 2 best performing horses have of course been Summer Bird and Mine That Bird, you know who's 3rd on the list? Stone Legacy, who has career earnings just over 200k.

His leading earner this year is Birdrun who has made 67k. After 8 months that is unbelievably bad for a 5k stallion. Possible insurance claim bad for a 30k stallion

VOL JACK 08-29-2010 08:28 PM

Harlan's Holiday at whatever fee he stands.

MISTERGEE 08-29-2010 08:30 PM

for those on a tight budget West Acre for $2500

Yuck.

Danzig 08-29-2010 10:21 PM

city zip seems impressive. nowhere near as highly regarded as his brother when he entered stud, but he's outshining ghostzapper-and quite a few others as well.

I really like Northern Afleet and City Zip for the money ($10k). Both are in the top 15 on the general sire list this year, as usual.

Unusual Heat
Cees Tizzy
Bring the Heat
INXS.

The 2nd and 4th ones should have been relocated to KY 10-15 years ago.

freddymo 08-30-2010 03:47 PM

Malibu Moon is on the same track Smart Strike was on 5 years ago.

D'wildcat and Wildcat Heir have have plenty of quick horses.

PSH 08-30-2010 04:16 PM

My fave

Stormy Atlantic has become my favorite sire.
Listed at $35,000....

declansharbor 08-30-2010 05:43 PM

Question:: Has Henny Hughes had any decent offspring/sprinters to this point? Thx in advance.

Not yet, but it's early.

Pedigree Ann 08-30-2010 08:37 PM

The old stand-by, Slew City Slew, at $3500.

randallscott35 08-30-2010 08:38 PM

Mineshaft at any price. Should've had 2 G1s at Toga in a half hour.

hockey2315 08-30-2010 09:08 PM

War Front is going to be an excellent turf sire at $10K. . . Widcat Heir is an obvious one if you're looking for something cheap and precocious.

The Indomitable DrugS 08-30-2010 09:21 PM

City Place's freshman year - he had eight different horses sell for six figures at 2yo sales ... and they all came from absolutely abysmal mares.

The most expensive of which was Wall Street Wonder - who sold for like 350K. A lot of them became runners.

He stands for 5K - but you could probably chisel them down to almost nothing. I'd like to see a sire like that get a good book.

No first year sire has ever had a book as dismal as IC's.
