A different tune will kick off the Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK (AP)—Start spreading the news: Sinatra’s out at the Belmont Stakes.

The New York Racing Association says Frank Sinatra’s classic version of “New York, New York” is being replaced by “Empire State of Mind” as the music heard when the horses step onto the track for the $1 million Belmont on Saturday.

The change is being made because Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” has become a “quintessential 21st century theme song for New York City,” says NYRA marketing director Neema Ghazi.

“New York, New York” replaced “Sidewalks of New York” in 1997.

trash can.

OldDog 06-04-2010 01:06 PM

“I’m the new Sinatra..."

Yeah, right

Just for kicks I googled the lyrics. I wonder if they put them up on video so the crowd can chant along?

MaTH716 06-04-2010 01:11 PM

That is just horrible.

Update from the Paulick Report

Quote:

UPDATE: After conflicting reports from news outlets that directly quoted from Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State of Mind’, it has come to the attention of the Paulick Report that the version in question is actually the Alicia Keys version which is a huge difference in content. While she is on the original Jay-Z version, her full ‘Empire State of Mind’ is a much classier rendition of the song.

Linny 06-04-2010 02:10 PM

Oh, that's great. We get the "classier" version of the song. I'm afraid to ask what the low brow version sounds like.

I want "Sidewalks of New York" back quite honestly.

After brief consideration . . . and some Woodford on the rocks . . . perhaps it's best that a song is used to which the crowd cannot sing along. Invariably I cringe as the TV mic picks up a segment of the crowd singing pathetically off-key. Last month I distinctly heard a chorus or horrible attempts during the playing of my beloved My Old Kentucky Home, which thank God is played (not sung) each year by a university band that does the job right. Note to NBC: A mic on the band ONLY will suffice, thank you. Don't put one on the drunks in the crowd. And while Sinatra was one of the best, the sight of folks arm in arm attempting to dance step to NYNY would be a signal that it's a good time to hit the head before the race.

HOnestly the original is God awful but her version without him? The haha classier one?

That one is even worse.

I usually couldn't care less about stuff like this but this song in either version is truly awful.

dylbert 06-04-2010 03:11 PM

After demise of NYRA and legalization of pari-mutuel betting in Georgia, Belmont will move to new Atlanta track and Ray Charles' rendition of Georgia on My Mind will be played... or Willie Nelson's. Damn, here we go again... or Sweet Georgia Brown...

lemoncrush 06-04-2010 04:06 PM

I always thought they played "New York Groove" off the Ace Frehley solo album back in the late 70's. ;)

jballscalls 06-04-2010 05:18 PM

i thought people of all generations liked Sinatra??

aw well, change is always in the air

One presumes that they won't be using this version ^ (includes lyrics, not for the squeamish...)

I'm a big Sinatra fan, but ESoM was the city's anthem last year and they obviously want to go in a more youthful direction. NY, NY gets played every goddamn game at Yankee Stadium, it's not as if there's nowhere to hear it anymore.

richard burch 06-05-2010 12:30 AM

Sacrilege

this whole song thing pisses me off and i don't even like the song n.y n.y.

with all the b.s. going on with N.Y. racing you have to wonder what knuckle head said" yeah, that sounds like a good idea. lets change the song that we have been singing for years to show everyone we're on top of it.
lets not worry about casinos, bankruptcy and OTB's right now. lets just fluck with everyone and do something symbolic"

what do you think they expect to gain by changing the song? payola?

i believe they should not only sing n.y. n.y. but have liza come out and perform it.

i just saw her on joy behar and she looks great!

ateamstupid 06-05-2010 12:33 AM

Yes, let's all listen to the male Liza Minnelli fan. Because changing a song no one listens to means they're not worrying about their big issues.

"East Side-West Side" was seriously dated, stale and empty 40 years ago.

"New York-New York" always seemed artificial, shallow and self centered.

Though apt, perhaps.

But I'm open to new things.

I could have cozied up to Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind."

your right.

their "to do" list was:

#1. fix or get rid of OTB.

#2. get a VLT's/casino at aqueduct. (like 5 years later)

#3.change that annoying song before the belmont stakes.

They probably said:

"well we f'd up the first two so lets just move on to #3.
Oh! that we can do!"

The original's too slow, so this is my suggestion. I'm sure DT'ers will love it.

What does anything in Sinatra's song have to do with the Belmont Stakes? I'm all for just looping the chorus. I also think it was Liza who shot Pac.

Joe Drape apparently tweeted last night that he'd have no problem with replacing New York, New York with Empire State of Mind. That right there is another reason not to change.
