SA derby

Lucky had a very rough trip but gathered it up and passed every thing but Sids candy in the stretch only to get caught by Mandellas colt. Is everyone going to forget Mandellas colt and dwell on Luckys troubles?

2Hot4TV 04-03-2010 06:03 PM

Everybody has already given the Derby to the Wood winner.

Setsuko would need Giacomo's setup to make any sort of impact in the Derby.

Is Baffert being serious here?

Quote:

Baffert blamed Gomez for a bad ride.

“It was bad luck. It was a bad trip," Baffert said. "You can’t be on the inside on this track. (Gomez) took him back and he was fighting him. It was horrendous; his ride was horrendous. It’s unfortunate. The horse is a good horse. That’s the thing about synthetic. They’re not going to go fast. Keep him up there. He’s so afraid to let this horse run early, and it’s a shame, because that’s not Garrett. I don’t know why. He threw an interception.”

Baffert said he could not say if he would replace Gomez. “I’m not going to talk about that right now," he said. "I cannot believe he rode him that way. It’s ridiculous.”

Asked about the inquiry that followed, in which stewards made no change in the order of finish, Baffert said: “I didn’t really care. When I saw him on the rail, I said, ‘What is he doing?’ He must not have seen Jerry Bailey’s tape. We’re going to buy him some DVDs.”
last sentence made me laugh.

I think he was serious & I agree...it was a bad ride.

dalakhani 04-03-2010 08:14 PM

I agree with Baffert a thousand percent. It was a horrid ride. Setsuko lived up to those last two works going into the race.

eajinabi 04-03-2010 08:16 PM

Gomez blamed Espinoza for him shuffling back. According to NBC, Gomez confronted Espinoza after the race and they had to be seperated after a heated exchange.

ninetoone 04-03-2010 08:33 PM

In a related story, Oprah was seen yelling at a spoon today, saying it made her fat...

booner 04-03-2010 08:46 PM

Wow. Baffert was PO'ed (to state the obvious).

This might get interesting.

slotdirt 04-03-2010 09:09 PM

I actually thought for a second after the race that with three straight interesting rides by Gomez that Baffert might consider a change. Doubt that would happen though.

ninetoone 04-03-2010 09:13 PM

He should give the mount to Victor...LOL

Except the last work wasnt him the clockers got the wrong horse .... Dick got him in 49 and change , funny thing is they called Dick and asked him what he got him in and yet they still didnt change the time , tell me clockers arent jus a lil sneaky.:D

AeWingnut 04-03-2010 10:47 PM

Everyone will put Looking@Lucky in their bet simply because he had trouble.
No one was going to catch the winner

the SA Derby was a good prep for the Derby now
not so much

Thats hilarious. I bet him off those last two works! LOL. How did you guys feel about the performance?

RockHardTen1985 04-03-2010 11:16 PM

No way Gomez comes off this horse.

Is this the same jock who supplied Body's college fund single handedly aboard Midnight Lute? Stay classy Bob.

Indian Charlie 04-03-2010 11:25 PM

Singlehandedly?

Midnite Lute?

What am I missing here?

ML was a beast and wouldn't have lost with PG1985 betting on him.

Agreed. Any other jock would be a step down. He did reedeem himself in winning a tight photo with Ventana.

Still, to say we will get him Bailey DVDs is beyond insulting.

I'm sure he was just venting.

But hey, I'd take JB over GG in a second.

No comment works well

Indian Charlie 04-03-2010 11:31 PM

I disagree.

These freakin dumbass pinhead jocks need to get blasted publicly way more often.

I don't think GG was why that horse lost today.

1. I never said he was.
2. It was a dumb ride.
3. Jocks tend to overthink things, and by overthink, I mean think at all.
4. As a result of #3, for most jocks, bad things are going to happen.

It was a well deserved and funny quip.

kgar311 04-03-2010 11:53 PM

Just showed highlights of the major preps on sports center just now and said that Gomez landed a few punches on Espinoza before they were separated

I learned a new handicapping angle at the Santa Anita Derby today.

Go with the horse that has the most girls with blond hair in short dresses in the paddock.

I think everyone was pleased with the way the colt ran.

Gomez ride stunk up the place and he deserves the crap abuot his poor position of Looking at Lucky.

He put LAL in a place to be trapped and that's what happened.

Baffert should put Victor on Lookin at Lucky.

jpops757 04-04-2010 08:52 AM

If he takes GG off the colt dosent he get the 1st call of Pletcher after JR stays aboard the Wood winner? Not a bad switch for GG.

NTamm1215 04-04-2010 09:13 AM

Apparently Jill Baffert voiced her opinion to Espinoza in the paddock before a later race.

"Baffert was in the saddling area to oversee his three entries in another stakes race when Espinoza walked by. "Are you trying to kill my jockey?" he said.

Baffert's wife, Jill, then lit into Espinoza, asking why he tried to unseat Gomez. Espinoza repeatedly denied any wrongdoing as she continued her rant while her husband and fans watched."

She might be sleeping with GG

Never!

We all know the class act that is Jill Baffert. I better shut up or maybe Bob will threaten to have the site shut down.

Here is yet another article. After watching the replay, I think she and Gomez have a good point. That was pretty dirt on Espinoza's part.

You don't let an odds-on favorite force his way up inside of you at that point in the race.

Look at what Migliore and Cohen both did to an odds-on favorite in the Whirlaway. Migliore intentionally cut him off - veered inward sharply and got his own horse cut in the back leg - and Cohen went WAY out of his way to gun and intimidate going into the 1st turn.

What's Espinoza supposed to do - push the horse to his outside out and give Lookin At Lucky a VIP invite path up the rail because Gomez wanted to save ground? Saving ground is close to pointless on that track anyway.

Anyone who thinks Espinoza was totally out of horse at that point is kidding themselves .. you're never out of horse that early on synthetic. It's not like they were flying up front.

Doug, what is your opinion on Candy now? Im guessing the beyer is in the 100-105 range, and Im also thinking he can still improve first time dirt. Are you really going to jump off?

Right. I don't want my RETARDS trying to win races (which is hard enough for them) but, rather, I want them to be out there trying to **** with the other RETARDS. ****** demolition/roller derby. Any jock that intentionally hugs the rail on a tiring horse just needs to be fined. There's absolutely no justification for it.

For someone like yourself, who loves the syn-dirt move, are you not happy about this? LAL goes from the clear cut second choice, to maybe the 3,4 choice depening on the Arkansas Derby result.
