429 out of a Diablo mare too... I like Diablo. It's hard to find mares by him since he stands in Japan.

sumitas 08-15-2006 03:10 PM

interesting about DIablo, good catch...$20K for the Strategic Mission filly, hip 438

the Include is $30k, the Carson CIty hip 442 $16k, a bargain.

you'd certainly think so...444 a Desrt Warrior filly, $1.5k.

pedigrees only go so far...you've got to be healthy and the paper to back you up, but this sale is full of bargains for the buyers and the breeders are taking it on the chin.

Well, for that price, I'd buy the horse for a sport horse career and leave them off of the track. Most of the Secretariat lined thoroughbreds make excellent jumpers. :D

sumitas 08-15-2006 03:26 PM

451 is a solid Desert Warrior colt...$9k, a bargain.

Bargains indeed! Reminds me of last fall's NY bred sale. Yikes!

sumitas 08-15-2006 03:29 PM

452 Aptitude filly, $1k...unreal
454, a Kafwain colt...Kafwain's have been going very well, this one $8k, a steal.

Downthestretch55 08-15-2006 03:34 PM

Unreal is right! Just like last fall...a "blood bath" for breeders.
Did you know that it costs just to be listed in the catalogue,($300), vetted, trucking to the sale, and the blood stock agent's cut?
Geesh, they would have been better off giving this one to their local 4-H club and taking a tax deduction. They lost money on that one. Just the stud fee and keep for the year...sad day for them.

sumitas 08-15-2006 03:37 PM

no bid on the Captain Bodget.
no bid on Dream RUn filly,
460, $3k by Royal ANthem o/o mare that won over $500k
462, Say Florida Sandy $1.5k

what a bloodbath for the breeders.

No kidding, DTS... jumpers go for more than that. What's sad about it is that any one of these could end up the next "Showing Up." Showing Up was only a $60k purchase.

sumitas 08-15-2006 03:48 PM

Black Tie Affair , no bid.

ummm Fasig Tipton needs to do some work to enhance the pool of buyers if they have this sale next year. these prices are way too low.
469, Western Expression, no bid
473 no bid, pathetic
476, $2.5k, Gold Case o/o stakes winning mare
477, Desrt Warrior filly, $4.7k
478, Kelly Kip o/o sp earner of over $200k, $20k
479, Exploit colt $1k
480, filly by Say Florida Sandy, sw dam earning over $144k, $5.2k

this is like a charity event for buyers, why breed when losing so much money, the breeders have to be asking themselves.

Downthestretch55 08-15-2006 03:58 PM

463 - Catienus went for 16.5 K
470- the AP Jet...only 8K
465--Black Tie Affair..that horse was way crooked...out

Will be interesting to see tomorrow's write up...those seats are empty.

sumitas 08-15-2006 04:11 PM

yeah, i can't see the conformation at all on tv.

Me either... especially when I don't have the video for it. I'd probably take a chance on a crooked horse for these prices.

Downthestretch55 08-15-2006 04:29 PM

I can't figure out where the pinhookers are. There are some very nice ones going for dirt cheap.
A 10K investment now could bring 100K at the Keeneland spring sale.
This is an incredible auction!
I wish I was there.
Hey Sumitas, don't know if you mentioned it...that Desert Warrior (477) went for only 4.7K. Breeders are really taking it on the chin today!

sumitas 08-15-2006 07:11 PM

the place must have been infested with bottom fishers. there were very few serious bidders in attendance, judging by the very low overall bids. many horses went RNA, rightfully so, rather than give them to the piranhas there

.........HEAD...........................NOT
DATE SOLD AMOUNT AVERAGE SOLD MEDIAN

8/15/06 70 680,500 9,721 63 5,350

FT has a lot of work to do to attract serious buyers to the open sale.

One Desert Warrior was a $20k RNA, plus he had one sold for $40k in the preferred, so he's off to a decent start. today's crowd would be better off shopping at flea markets.

LEPRECHAUN RACING, AGENT won a number of halfway decent priced horses in the $20k range. other than that it was bargain basement shopping.

sumitas 08-15-2006 08:02 PM

Just look at the numbers, you can see there is LOTS of room for improvement in this sale. Such as bringing the average up to $20k next year. A few more breeders might be able to stay in the market then.

There's plenty of room for improvement. As we've both seen, each sale varies. It's a "crap shoot".
After the last one, I expected a much stronger market.
Some very nice ones didn't get touched today.
A little difficult for me to figure, other than the "whim" of the market.
The pinhookers, if they had showed up, would have found some great values.

sumitas 08-15-2006 08:45 PM

that's true DTS. there was a distinct absence of the right buyers today. for heaven's sake, almost 50% of some real nice horses, on paper anyway, went unsold. and i like that this was an open sale, in an effort to attract nice horses bred outside NYS. i like the concept but it got to be realized in the sales ring.

Sumitas,
Looks like Fasig-Tipton is putting a smiley face on it:

:) good article. the sale should continue and FT makes a good point that not every mare needs to be bred. it seems that the demand did not meet supply in this sale and the message to some breeders is get out of the business because you will lose your shirt. next year should improve, seeing this was the first year of the open sale.

Wouldn't it be great if this actually forced breeders to actually race their horses instead of trying to breed for the market? I would love nothing more than to see that 1,000 dollar Aptitude filly earn more than that over-priced Green Monkey!!!!

I'm with you on that view Lahage.
Seems to me that there have been more than a few good runners that had very modest beginnings.
There is a huge difference between breeding to market and breeding to race. Huge.
I also agree that not all mares should be bred. Hot sires bring out the hopes in some breeders. When the market isn't there, their "gamble" is a "fold".

sumitas 08-16-2006 12:31 PM

The Wheelaway filly is by far the best looking of that bunch.

Two that jumped out at me were 524 and 539.
Both looked real good in their photos, both solid peds.
Those prices were "give a ways".
Sumitas, you know what Wheelaway's should go for.
Somebody found real bargains in this sale. Figure the investment times fifty in eight months in the spring sales, or private sales where they'll times the investment by thirty if they don't wait.

Cajungator26 08-16-2006 01:03 PM

LOVE the Yonaguska colt.

Hip 325 isn't bad either... legs look a little fragile for my liking, but it's so tough to tell with yearlings.

they have something to build on. FT should be able to boost the demand for next year for this open session.

Cajungator26 08-16-2006 03:15 PM

Sumitas,

What do you think of the ped on this filly?

She's a CANTER filly... they want $1,800 bucks for her. She's supposedly sound, but doesn't want to race.

http://www.pedigreequery.com/moon+landing2

sumitas 08-16-2006 03:30 PM

imo, for breeding purposes, no. her bottom line is very weak in terms of production. there is very little black type. have fun with her if you decide to get her, but you'd get clobbererd at the auction should you breed her.
