I agree and expect Al Sharpton to be in a neon colored jogging suit today. Can't believe it made it in.

SCUDSBROTHER 02-19-2009 08:06 PM

What do you think is funny? You mean funny like laughing at the white-trash character Brad Pitt played in the movie Kalifornia? In other words..."the messenger" ...not "the message."

The protest is on. Tomorrow in front of the Post's headquarters in Manhattan. Neon colored jogging suit is optional.

timmgirvan 02-19-2009 09:57 PM

Racist? the fact that a chimp could have written the stimulus bill has nothing to do with our beloved president......I mean...really! How politically thin-skinned can you be?

hi_im_god 02-19-2009 10:52 PM

it's pretty disingenuous to pretend that black's haven't been portrayed as apes and monkey's in cartoon's by those trying to make a point of their alleged inferiority. for hundreds of years.

more troubling is the post's response which completely ignores the issue.

if i tried to post that cartoon here with a "guess derby trail needs someone else to post anti-turk rants" caption, how long would it last?

and nothing personal scuds. i think you're nuts but that has nothing to do with your skin tone.

at best, it was tone deaf. but more likely the tone was intended. which is even more troubling.

just to be clear.

are you unaware that we have a black man as president or unaware that portraying black people as monkey's is a slander?

wonder why they had two white cops doing the shooting on a street?

and why are they wide-eyed, kinda like "heck that may not have been
the right thing to do..."

Kinda reminds me of an incident a little while back.

WHO said it was portraying Obama??? A total idiot would feel that he could get away with that portrayal of Obama......more likely that he was trying to point out the IQ of the authors of the stimulus bill

pgardn 02-19-2009 11:07 PM

white cops shooting accidentally, sort of, on the street...
hmmmmm

pretty much anyone who noticed we had a black president and that chimps have been used for hundreds of years as substitute's for black people in racist cartoon's.

thus the initial title of the thread "tone deaf".

it anticipated your defense.

I'm not defending the cartoon, period. I'm saying it could be taken another way

Seems to me there is even more than a chimp.

Sharpton.
Does that mean I am supposed to call you Hitler?
Or Sgt. Schultz?

timmgirvan 02-19-2009 11:20 PM

We're talking about a cartoon.......Schultz, definately!

it would help if the cartoonist explained it.

but he's not talking to the media since it was published. and his paper's only comment ignored the issue.

you don't seem hateful timm.

but you do seem to have a knee jerk reaction to defend anything published in a rupert murdoch publication.

notice i haven't said anything about al sharpton?

you really don't want to defend idiots of any stripe.

The phenomena of the Political Cartoon is usually not explained, but I could be wrong. Maybe the paper needed to explain it? I don't think I'm hateful at all. Who publishes the cartoon...if syndicated....then more than Murdochs papers would be defending worse cartoons than this one, imho

AS is a certifiable POS

Why should the cops look like "uh oh"?
And killing the chimp stimulus writer on the street.
I find that an interesting way to do this.

Or you see nahting?

Truthfully..I don't see it.

..and I never look at the political stuff as "art", if ya know what I mean...

SniperSB23 02-19-2009 11:37 PM

I remember the glory days when DRF had a great cartoonist that made you want to buy the print edition even if you had the online PPs already. Then they fired him. Maybe they'll fire Andy Beyer and his figures next to ensure their total downfall.

timmgirvan 02-19-2009 11:38 PM

...they usually get rid of the good stuff

they usually don't need to be explained.

but i do recall that when the new yorker ran a controversial cover with a cartoon of obama and his wife doing a terrorist "fist bump", him in islamic dress and her with a 70's angela davis fro, the artist was all over the media explaining the cartoon was intended to mock the conservative media's idea that "bumping fists" was related to terrorism.

if either the post or the artist have an explanation, the clock is ticking.

We had a black gansta type getting shot by police
an apparent error, not that long ago. ONe cop standing
by very close by and watching.

We had a pet chimp go wild in Conn. and get shot on Monday.
By police.

Cartoon.
We got a scene on a street with two white goofy looking
cops doing the shooting and looking shocked.

We got a chimp.

And then we throw in the idea of killing the stimulus.

And the chimp wrote the bill.

There are lots of ways to look at this and I personally
I think it was meant to be blurry and explained in a number of ways.

If the intent was just to accidentally get rid of an idea
that was written by fool(s)- the chimp, using some other
side stories... it is an odd way to portray this. This just does not
pop on to a page without any forethought.

I think its funny because I find controversial humor to be funny. I still think its racist and did not belong in the newspaper... but I'm still going to laugh.

I tell jokes about all different races and genders and sexuality. Jokes are funny.

you really dont believe this do you? It had everything to do with our beloved President.

Still hilarious... but in bad taste.

Danzig 02-20-2009 09:27 AM

i didn't find the cartoon to be funny at all. but my first thought when i saw some thinking it was bashing our president was that i thought the attack was on our congress, they're the ones who wrote the bill...
at any rate, in poor taste all things considered.

Danzig 02-20-2009 11:17 AM

just read that the post apologized.

saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.
and then i read this:

The Post is owned by News Corp., which also is the parent company of FOX News.

i didn't know that.

i didn't know that.

That's one of the reasons I take what they write with a grain of salt..much as the right treats the NY Times
