I was just telling Danzig I'm a little worried about the weather we're expecting here tomorrow - big storm coming. O Firefly has been working really well, getting fit and is really happy in the Sherman barn - her trainer, exercise rider and groom all think the world of her, she has a definite personality (D-I-V-A) but she has her issues, too. She's a very high strung filly who HATES having her ears grabbed (they have done that to her to get her into the gate) or other unexpected contact to her face. I think the rain in her face is going to upset her... or it will make her more pissy and determined - hard to tell with her. I'm waiting to get her on the turf, that's her real strength (her hooves are HUGE!). I'm telling friends and family members that will be at the track tomorrow not to bet more than $2 across the board, I just don't know how she'll do.

Thanks for the good words, I can't wait to feed her carrots after the race!

darnit!
she looked good thru most of it. hope she comes out well from that race derby cat. let us know how she is, and what's up for her.

AeWingnut 02-15-2009 07:18 PM

I guess she needed a race.

DerbyCat 02-15-2009 09:25 PM

Firefly looked great in the paddock, she was alert and her ears were pricked, her jock was given the instruction to stay near the lead unless two other horses wanted to duel for the lead. She did exactly what was asked of her but she tanked on the straight away - it was raining pretty good and the Tapeta gets real heavy with water on it (it felt much different walking on it today compared to yesterday, my feet sunk in and it felt really deep and heavy) but there really is no excuse. :zz: Steve (the trainer) expected much better from her and he's trying to figure out what to do next. He's going to work her later this week and try to get her to sit off other horses and then pass them at the end, we've got to get her so that she'll pass other horses in the stretch. I think we'll put her in a sprint next (maybe in two weeks) just to get her to be off the pace and then hopefully pass other horse, and we'll probably put some cheater blinks on her... but to be honest, we're really just waiting for the turf course to open back up in April - until then I don't think she'll be paying her own way :(

I have no major complaints (I didn't go into this expecting a win), she came out of it with no bleeding and she's in one piece - that's really all I can ask for at this point :wf

I would love to own my own horse on my own without any partners and pick out whatever races I want. I think that would be anyone's best wish come true. You are certainly living the dream

Best wishes for the future for you and YOURS!

I'd love to have a chance to be at the track next time.

I promise I won't try to wiggle in for a Winner's Circle photo or anything...

:-)

I just watched her race. What a beautiful color she is. I'm only a gambler and lifetime observer when it comes to horses, but I'm not surprised at all she tired in the stretch after viewing. Not a serious knock on William. He's one of my faves of the last year.

At least you can say the leading career jockey in North American history was the winner of your race....
