How Cold Is It?

I just walked to my mailbox and back, no gloves but my fingers were only exposed for say 3 to 4 minutes max. The tips of my fingers became numb that fast, God as my witness.

Wind chill makes it feel like 20 below, possible it may approach 30 below at times tonight. :zz:

I'm off work tomorrow but no matter. I rented 3 movies from Blockbuster, plenty of food and am settled in for the next 36 hours. Yikes it's nasty up here in O High O.

doll0608 01-15-2009 05:56 PM

Its 10 degrees here right now supposed to get near zero. Unlike you, almost everyone else in the horse industry will be working in this tomorrow. Lucky us!

Cherie, do the water buckets in the barn freeze overnight, or do they stay warm enough with the body heat?

They do freeze. Feed time they change the water in the buckets and then late we have a groom just walk down the shed row to make sure they have water available. We have to make sure they have water available because if they don't drink enough water they can get impacted and colic. Nothing is more fun than a sick horse that needs tending to in the freezing weather.

We don't have them. Just the lucky groom that gets to change the buckets.

Danzig 01-15-2009 06:08 PM

was just reading yesterday how this time of year produces dehydrated and colicky horses due to water freezing...

How many horses are there? Would the barn let you use them or sees them as a fire hazard?( I'm talking about the buckets with the heater built in so the horse can't play with it.)

We've treated 3 colics so far this week. Had to send one to Tufts.:(

Danzig 01-15-2009 06:18 PM

and it's cold here as well. 16 tonite-rare for south ark. but that's nothing compared to what some are seeing.

ninetoone 01-15-2009 06:21 PM

OK, I'll bite.

It's so cold out I heard Al Gore just returned his Nobel Prize.

Well, at least the fresh air exchange is good for the horses. Sorry the barns are that cold, though!

You bet, huge increase in impaction colics at the local clinics come the first cold weather snap. Best to heat the water a bit, gets horses to drink more.

I just wouldn't ever sleep well at night knowing bucket heaters were on in the barn....maybe I'm just paranoid, because I kow the newer ones are pretty well made but to me they just scream "I want to catch on fire while you are sound asleep!"

jwkniska 01-15-2009 06:35 PM

never even got to 0 today. down to -15 tonight.

Riot 01-15-2009 06:36 PM

I agree about the bucket heaters (I hate automatic waterers in stalls btw, too, but because you can't tell how much they are drinking) We used to go through three or four times day and add hot water to the buckets. The horses loved it, and indeed would slurp that warm water down, they grew to look forward to it.

I am just glad that my day off worked out to be one of the coldest days in close to a decade here, tomorrow morning. Believe it or not, skinny ole me who can't gain weight, I don't wear anything past short sleeves when the temp is around 40 degrees, my body is aclimated to this from working around those temps in our coolers at work, etc.. Major run on sentence. Probably will have to just throw some loot in my twinspires account 2morrow since I will not be venturing to Brutal Park aka Beualh Park.

It's funny...I'd take this over summer all year long anytime. Personal preference, and yeah, it's -20 out, but much preferred over FLA or AZ, etc..

Antitrust32 01-16-2009 08:24 AM

it wont be warmer than 67 for the next week... :(

:p feel free to hate me!

dellinger63 01-16-2009 08:30 AM

Thank God or I guess fossil fuel using humans and flatulent livestock or it could be 130 below instead of 30 below. Al Gore 'You the Man'.

I just love it when people use cold snaps as a defence of global warming.:zz:

Drudge Report is famous for that approach.
